Good price - you might consider a Wix 51516, same specs (pressure, anti-drainback, et), but is a longer filter, maybe 1.5 inches longer. There is also a Wix 51515, even longer, but I haven't tried it.

    Mazola. :D

I've been on a bunch of auto/motorcycle forums over the years and the one thing they all have in common is the oil opinion threads. People's opinion on the "best" oil runs about as deep as their loyalty to a sports team or political affiliation.

I also get the Wix 51515 by the case...this would be the "long ford" filter and fits my 60's vintage dodge trucks...and the same price as the 53148.

Use any decent oil, I used conventional in my old 2006 Tacoma. The 4.0L is not a high performance engine, it's not like we're talking about a 911 turbo here. The OEM Toyota filters are made where nowadays? China? Thailand? They're junk and not the same thing as what Toyotas come with from factory (even with the same part #). Use something else like a WIX or even a Microgard from Oreillys which is made by WIX. My experiences with Mobil 1 is that its trash, Castrol syntec is alot better, at least was the case in my decent performance toyota turbo vehicle.

Can you clarify why this is only for 2010-2014 if the Tacoma has had the same engine since 2005? Also, Toyota now recommendds 0w-20 for improved engine protection and efficiency, but that chart says the Tacoma still needs 5w-30?

I am asking because I run Mobil15w-30 in my 2007 Tacoma PreRunner, and would like to use 0w-20 if applicable and safe.

Neither Mobile 1 or Castrol are pure syn. oils. But if you believe they are then they must be. Check your oil fill cap the 6 and 4 cylinder use different oils and different drain mileage.

I just wish Mobil 1 came in the handy 5 gallon bucket, I maintain three vehicles with it.

    Things I need to tow.
The difference is going to hypothetically be in the amount of detergents and/or acid neutralizers in order to get the extended mileage. Since I'd never go 15,000 miles between changes, the point is moot for me.

^^^ I agree with the longer filter
I work for the city as a fleet mechanic and we use wix filters with no problem, get the best one you can get as there's different grades. The larger the filter the better (more surface area) as long as the pressure spring is rated the same.

When I used to build muscle car engines, I would block the bypass hole in the engine block so ALL the oil was flowing through the filter. U just had to make sure to warm up the engine fully before running it hard or you would blow the filter right off the block. Not very reasonable for the daily driver but it was in a 69 chevelle 1/4 mile car that was my weekend warrior.
Knowing all the oil was filtered and none was bypassed was IMO the best protection for my $10,000+ engine.
The better filters generally have more pleats therefore more surface area for filtration so you they filter the oil through a smaller micron paper filter. This is evident when cutting open a cheap filter as opposed to a quality filter.

Most oil even brands of a different brand come from a handful of manufactures. The additives are where an oil exceeds over the competitor's.
I change my oil no longer than 5000km or every 3 months even if the book says 7-8 thousand KM's. Its the cheapest maintenance you can do to protect UR investment. (even a vehicle sitting will break down the oil)
Another thing to remember is how you drive, short trips where the oil doesn't get very hot wont evaporate the condensation that forms in you oil. Obviously if you drive in hostile environments (dusty, cold et..) you need to change your oil more.

I may get some heat for this but im not a fan of Toyotas filters. Open one up and you'll see there cheap, not a ton of pleats in there. I don't know what company makes them for Toyota but generally most car manufactures have a filter company make the filters for them. Its cheaper for the manufacture but they charge you more. It kind of pisses me off because they recommend there own filter (and the price is marked up) so they can make money but its really made by Fram or another company and the same filter is cheaper when you buy it directly from Fram of whoever makes the filters. There's my rant ;)

Mobil 1 Full Synthetic oil. I drained the dealership oil out at 3k and went synthetic. I will run that for the rest of my taco's life.

    Getting there...
OEM filter and Mobil 1 synthetic 5w-30 for the past 2 changes. Nothing wrong yet. Everyone has their opinion about oil and oil filters. Pick any reputable oil company and filter and run it, just make sure you follow the OCI. If you're still nervous, you could take a sample and send it to Blackstone Labs to have it analyzed to see how your engine and the oil are doing.
