I had a tonneau cover and now a shell. I will never own another truck without a shell. I like being able to lock my shell, sleep in in, carry a large amount of items inside, carry my lab inside it, etc.
If I ever need to haul anything large (very rare besides atv's), I'll just use my double atv trailer

Truxedo roll up with velcro. I had it on 2 truck so far and still love it. Easy to just roll up if you have a big load.

Shell for me. Perfect for camping, sleeping in the bed, hauling my big ass 120LB dog and also perfect for my kids when they were little. Used the back for changing diapers, storing strollers, etc.

Owned both. Thought I would use my shell to sleep in while out fishing, etc. Think that was youthfull thoughts and it was not secure.
Love my hard tonneau Undercover cover. Easy to open, locks easily, very secure, inside light, and very easy to take off if needed in about 5 minutes with a helping hand. Also looks good (black) and shines up great with a little wax. Can't go wrong with it:D

Bought my truck used and it came with a camper shell. I like it, I don't use it a lot though. I wouldn't buy it myself. Original owner spent $850 on it back in 1999! If I had to buy my own i'd get a roll-up tounneau

Heh. When I was in Uni, I had a little blue Toyota pickup truck with a white shell... the most frequent cargo in the back there was kegs of beer and rugby buddies sleeping hangover's off on the way to our games on weekends. Ahhhh... the memories... good times.
