I was going to do the Smitty's but the consensus here was N-Fabs. I ordered them on Amazon for $308. They arrived the next day. They're not as snug to the bottom of the cab as I thought they'd be but I like the look of them. They're not for me actually. My wife is 5'1" and my three year old is 42". They needed the bars. I've yet to use them. Looks like I'll have yo get a lift :\ they seem sturdy. Installation took about 15 minutes. I opted for black in hopes they would blend into the shadow of the truck. Future mods include black parts so I'll stick with the scheme.

Ding protection? The steps themselves stick out from the cab and slightly farther than the stock tires. They might offer protection but it'd have to be a pretty square and accurate lick from a door.

I'm planning to do the Satoshi grill mod. I was disheartened to see TOYOTA grill emblems for $70 on that auction site. I know where they're getting them from. We *could* do a group buy from alibaba (200 minimum order) or you can go to www.cruiserparts.net. The list price is $29. Shipping is $8-9. BUT, if you use the coupon code "MUD2014" you get $10 off! I paid $27 for what many are paying $70+ on fleabay.

I've logged three tanks on the stock setup. I received the truck with 7100 miles on the odometer so it's probably not even broken in yet. I travel about 15 miles round trip daily on the bypass at 65mph (with cruise ON). Other than that I'm usually logging 35 mph speeds around town. Here is the data from a logbook I keep in my console. I update at every fill up. Assuming the tank is 21 gal. (2015 data says 21.1 gal):

    Mileage/Fuel Used/Fuel Left/Avg.mpg./Reserved/Notes
    318.8 / 17.8 gal. / 3.2 gal. / 17.91 / 57.3 miles / mostly city
    307.7 / 17.4 gal. / 3.6 gal. / 17.68 / 63.7 miles / mostly city
    360.0 / 18.3 gal. / 2.7 gal. / 19.67 / 53.1 miles / 3/4 tank hwy 65-75mph (interstate trip with 1/4 tank spent idling in Atlanta rush hour)
    328.8 / 17.8 gal. / 3.2 gal. / 18.42 / 58.0 miles

I've not pushed any tanks more than 20 miles beyond the point the yellow light comes on the dash. This data table proves I can drive another 50+ miles before fueling up. 17.8 idsn't bad but it's still better than my '04 F150 4.6 litre. Still, this is a rather thirsty truck. I've installed the CAI but not logged any data on this tank. Magnaflow exhaust arrives tomorrow. I don't want to wait to install the exhaust so my next chart will have two new variables. I'll chart three tanks, post intake & exhaust mods and post for comparison. I've read myriad threads here about intake and exhaust reducing mpg, not changing anything or increasing mpg without many people putting up hard numbers. Hopefully I can find some results you'll find appealing and perhaps put to rest some ideas about bolt-on mods and average, everyday performance increases...

To this point my mods have been focused on intended efficiency rather than aesthetic mods. These are rational approved baby steps. As previously mentioned, I fully intend to replace the wheels (FN Wheels 16x8 Five Stars) and tires (most likely 265/75r16 Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo 2s). I imagine most of us would agree the Taco is a polite looking truck in bone stock form.
I'm looking way down the line at lifts. Originally I considered the dreaded spacer lift but researched enough here over the last week to do something sensible. I like what I've read about Bilstein 5100s with an AAL on the back. I've window shopped online and pieced kits together to see total cost versus the popular Toytec BK0510. That's the Bilstein 5100 front & back, AAL, Eibach 620 coils and additional hardware. Subtracting the dif. drop and no plate spacers as well as the TW 5% off from Toytec (code 112710), the total is $590. Shipping is $70 putting me at $660 before installation. I'd love to do this myself but I work slow, have little free time and don't want to compress shocks on my own. Also, NONE of my friends are into auto stuff.
My one concern with this kit is the Eibach 620 coils. I've heard that it stiffens up the ride somewhat on the 2wd models. I really like the smooth stock ride of my Tacoma. It's very pleasing after taking bumps in my '04 F150 for so many years. I've seen some folks on here suggest a 590 coil (OME 884) on the front. This appeals to me. I don't need a full 3" lift. I rather prefer a subtle lift & level. I fear the Eibach's would be too stiff for my 2wd.

    Toytec:

    - $689 OME kit after discount (no top spacer or dif drop)
    http://toyteclifts.3dcartstores.com/OME-Tacoma-Suspension-lift-kit_p_231.html

-$590 Billstein/Eibach kit after discount (no top spacer or dif drop)
    http://toyteclifts.3dcartstores.com/Bilstein-Adjustable-lift-kit-with-5100-shocks_p_132.html

*Neither of these kit prices include front assembly. I'm looking at getting a local shop to do the install so they can assemble the shocks in house.

Piecing together a kit from Wheelers:

    -$560 Bilstein 5100 adjustable front & back, 1.5" AAL, OME 883 coils

Way down the line I'd consider some LR UCA's if things aint kosher on the alignment.

Magnaflow installed. It was actually more easy than the Volant install. Here's how I did it:

    Removal:
    1) Spray all the rubber hangers with PB Blaster. Let 'em drip a bit & soak.
    2) Moved the truck to warm, sunny spot. Lay down tarp & some cardboard so as not to ding up anything during removal. (flat, dry surface, parking brake ON)
    3) Remove spare tire (you'll need the room when snaking the pipe)
    4) Grab 15mm socket, loosen spring bolts.
    5) slide under truck, parallel to stock exhaust, place legs on rear hangers, grab pipe and basically hump it until the hangers slip out of the rubber bits.
    6) Snake it all out towards the front of the truck.

    Installation:
    1) Connect new straight pipe.
    2) Hit all those rubber suckers with more PB Blaster.
    3) attach muffler, don't clamp down.
    4) attach rear piece (be sure to leave protective wrapping on tip until finished).
    5) Hit all the hangers with some lube and slip them into the rubber bits.
    6) Tighten everything up. Double check all the hangers. Put spare back on.
    7) Fire up truck, crawl under and feel for leaks. Turn off and make adjustments.

Now, for the sound. Well.... it sounds like my late-Granddad's '91 S-10 Blazer after backing a boat into saltwater about 100 times. I've just only installed it and I understand there's a 700-800 mile break-in period on these mufflers. Initial crank it drones for a few seconds before settling down. The only drone is at 1100 rpm under substantial throttle. It's nice and quiet on the highway and while idling. My wife & kiddo didn't even notice it until I told them I'd done the swap. I took a video right after install. I'll do another one after 1000 miles to compare.

The main thing I've noticed since swapping intake and exhaust is the idle speed at cold start. The truck originally was up around 1300rpm at idle. After the Volant CAI, idle dropped to 1100rpm. After the Magnaflow install, idle is around 750-800rpm. Once the truck is suitably warmed up, idle is around 500rpm.

Hi MadDaddy, 1st thanks for posting about the MagnaFlow. I just ordered one from Amazon after reading your post last night and listening to your vids. There is 1 left on A.

Did they come with everything needed to hook up? Did you use the existing brackets and such?

    Thanks again for posting that.

    PS what is PB Blaster?

Great! Box came with five pieces: muffler, straight pipe, tip+over axle pipe and two clamps. Box is about 4-5 feet long. On a difficulty scale of one to five, this was a 1. The only strenuous part was getting the stock exhaust out of the rubber hangers. Be sure to spray those nubs inside and out with some kind of lubricant. Some use dish soap, wd40, or anything that will line up that rubber. I happened to have PB Blaster. It's just a multipurpose lube. Teardown and install took about an hour. The magnaflow hangers are easier to hang because they're not shaped like a mushroom tip on the end.

This forum is the absolute best for R&D! Thanks to snooping the forum I found this lift kit from Headstrong, which is exactly what I was looking for!

Strut assembly is a reasonable $90, meaning I can make this a driveway conversion rather than paying a shop to do the grunt work. $667 total prior to shipping. Now I can start squirreling away a little $ here and there and bite the bullet by year's end.

Three days in and I can hear the note changing after 90 miles. It no longer sounds like my grandfather's s-10 Blazer. The note has lowered and now it sounds like a NASCAR stock car when they drop a cylinder and are about 15 laps from grenading the engine. I'm not knocking the kit as it's just starting to cure. I must be forgiven too because I've always driven V8's or motorcycles before this truck. I'm getting used to the new sound. All this said, I like it. In spite of the 50 degree weather, I've been riding around with my windows down so I can hear the note changing.

Hey just wanted to let you know I put the MagnaFlow on today. Then drove it for about 30 miles. I really like it. I always thought the truck sounded good inside, but when I would get out to check the mail it was like listening to a windup toy. Now it has a nice soft rumble and at highway speeds very quiet.

Thanks againfor posting the Amazon sale, the vids of yours and the step by step instructions. It was really above the call of duty to do so. First beer is on me.

Hey dude! No problem. TW is a great place to procrastinate my homework. I'm about 600 miles into my break in period. I'm in the middle of a 400 mile trip right now. I'm noticing the muffler mellowing out. It is sounding great and is very quiet a highway speeds. I am very pleased. I let my dad and kid brother take out for a spin today and they both complimented the sound.
