Ok so first the backstory. My buddy just bought a 96 4wd v6 5-speed with a trd blower. It needed a couple things like knock sensors and injector o-rings. Well while in the process of getting it back running he found a diesel that he wants and now wants to get rid of the truck. He is giving me the awesome opportunity to swap my stock intake and other parts for the blower stuff, straight up. Its a 2nd gen blower. It's kind of rough looking but sounds good, just needs a little tlc. No doubt that I want to do it but the problem is that my truck has a little over 212k miles on it. So my question is, would y'all do the swap, even with that many miles?

I'm leaning more towards going through with it. I'm just afraid that I might blow the motor, when right now the truck runs like new.

96 Tacoma shouldn't have a blower on it. Anyways, I'd do the swap.

I'd do the swap. If you blow this motor just save up for another one.

Sean, I've seen pictures of your S-10. I'm surprised that this was even a question and that it's not already on the truck!

Yea I know. But the only reason I'm thinking of doing this is because of how cheap it's going to be. So if I blow the motor, I would be defeating the purpose.

Lol. Well that's the problem. I've got one truck sitting around in a thousand pieces, I don't need two haha.

I'll probably do it anyway. The more I think about it, the truck is probably only at about half it's life, if that. So it should be ok.

For you guys that are already s/c, how many miles did you have when it was installed and how many do y'all have on your truck now?

It may be dangerous when wheeling. Those boggers and all that extra power, something's gotta give....

Do it. My buddy SCed his at 186k and is doing just fine now. Drives the hell outa it too.

Amd yea unless the 96 has a 97ecu swapped in it..shouldn't have the blower on it. A 96 ecu will actually retard the timing so much you'll get less power out of it then what you started.

Ok thanks for the reassurance guys. I'm gonna call him today and tell him that I definitely want it. Then I'm going to start ordering all of the odds and ends that I know I'm gonna need.

As far as his truck being a 96, I've been reading about the 96's needing the ecu swap and he knows it as well because he has been talking to gadget at urd. I don't have a clue what's done to it and neither does he. It runs good but I haven't actually driven it, so it's very possible that its not producing much power.

Snapping cv's or something because of the power doesn't bother me. Most of that stuff is fairly cheap and easy to fix. I'm just going to have to be a little easier on the skinny pedal lol.

    Words of advise.

    How many miles on it?

If it has over 60K I would swap out the nose drive ( You can get a replacement from TRD with a core swap for the one on it). If you have a second vehicle, you might think about sending it out to Magnusun for a rebuild of the blower itself.

Give Gadget a call and talk about fueling. His fueling upgrade for the 3.4L is a must for that setup. The TRD 1st gen is know for high speed/low RPM lean out issues ( spark knock at highway speed with light load).

You will love that setup go for it

Awesome. Thanks for the advise. I'll check into it. I don't think it has a bunch of miles on it but when I take it off I'll feel the bearings and see if the have any slack or noise. If they do, I'll get the rebuild kit or just get a new nose. I'm also wanting the 7th injector kit but its going to have to wait a little while till I get the funds. It shouldn't hurt anything to run the blower without the fuel upgrade, correct? As long as I don't hammer down on it all the time.

I would atleast do thefree FPM mod until you can get the upgrades ( taping the boost vacuum line to the pressure regulator vent to up the pressure a little under boost

Mine ran without the mods for years, but I had the spark knock issue under certain conditions.

the URD kit took care of all my issues

Gadget is the man by the way.

Ok cool. I'll definitely look at doing that. I'm for sure doing a urd fuel upgrade but right now with Christmas and everything I can't afford to spend almost a grand on the truck.

On another technical point, I would suggest stepping up to a slightly higher octane than you have been normally using. A supercharger increases the pressure in the combustion chamber, and increases the odds of having pre-ignition ping. You may not even hear it, but your knock sensor will pick it up and retard your timing, thus decreasing power. No fun in adding a supercharger for (guessing) an additional 60 hp, only to lose 22 or 25 of that to timing being retarded.

Yep. I was already aware of that. You're alway suppose to run the highest octane in a forced induction or even high hp motors.

It's worth the $3.00 extra to fill the tank.
