    I understand what you're saying. But all those folks "subscribing" by adding even the most trivial of messages into the thread has a practical impact - it keeps the thread on the home page and bumps it to the top of the "new posts" list every time someone "opens a bag of popcorn" making it possible for other folks to become aware of the thread.

    If folks silently "subscribe" the thread will certainly be less cluttered. But there's a possibility that important/interesting threads may go unnoticed.

    Whenever someone "vote" in a poll - the poll bumps to the top of the "new posts" list. Perhaps that should happen whenever someone silently subscribes to a thread.

    That may introduce a different problem - if a thread bumps to the top even when someone subscribes, even though nothing new has been said on it, then folks who are "subscribed" will click in and find there's nothing new to read.

    It's a conundrum.
