SAS Quick Guide & Cost...

Most people should stay with IFS. SAS is intended for the extreme off roader. IFS can handle most courses of the SAS, just not as easy, or as well.

Now that you have seen a typical leaf sprung SAS. I'll post you an average cost of an excellent (IMO) IFS set up.

I used the powertrax no slip lockers for my SAS, so I will use them in this IFS build. I'll be including rocksliders, I believe these are a very important part in building a truck.

Now ask yourself... Do I really need to SAS my truck?

Everyone want's to SAS their truck because it's what Toyota should of offered in the first place when purchasing your truck. Like I mentioned earlier, SAS is for the extreme offroader. Why would you go and waste $5-10k on this just to become a mall crawler? So all the mothers and fathers can point and stare at your odd looking truck? Go for it, if you really care what other people think about it, then have at it.

I cannot see myself wasting this amount of money for looks, instead of functionality. If anyone tells you this is easy or cheap, then either ignore them or call them a bull shitter. This can be done efficiently and economically if you know exactly what you are doing. Parts can be gathered over a period of 6 months, 12 months or even years. I know people who have collected for 3 years and have came out fairly low on price. Excellent job for them!

Trailgear introduced their SAS kit just a month or two ago. Great source for someone to start. I'd recommend starting there. However, if you want to exclude any kit and start from scratch, there are several places to shop for SAS parts. Then you can chose to have your own individual swapped truck. NO SAS TRUCK IS ALIKE. No matter even if you bought someones kit. Everyone does something different.

Reasons why SAS is more beneficial over IFS. I've been asked before so I figured I'd post some information. This pertains to rock crawling and trail riding. IFS is superior to desert racing over SA.

I'll offer one reason, but I'm sure there are many more: The solid axle acts as a very long control arm. Longer control arms are favorable for off-road because...hum...it's difficult to explain. Things like springs and shocks don't have to swing through as much 'arc displacement' (to coin a phrase?) with longer control arms. Take a sheet a paper and draw and independent suspension set-up and a solid axle set up. Remember that an independent set up has control arms that hinge near the center of the vehicle. (There may be a modern 4WD independent front suspension whose control arms extend across the front of the vehicle; I can't think of one…Ford's old 'Twin I-Beam' [not 4WD] set-up comes to mind.) Go ahead and draw springs and shocks on the set-ups. Simple 'stick' figure representations will do.

Now imagine the suspension types being 'flexed.' The hinge point for the flexure of the IFS will be about the respective control arms' inner end. The hinge point for the solid axle front end is the opposite wheel/ground interface or, roughly twice the 'radius arm' of the IFS. The shocks and springs are fixed at the top (they don't move there) on either set-up while the bottom of the springs and shocks move with the axle (on solid axle) or control arm (IFS). Now, looking from the front or rear, note where the control arm/axle spring/shock attach points are while the vehicle is sitting on level ground (un-flexed). Allow one IFS wheel drop and allow one solid axle wheel to drop. Remember to hinge the IFS about the inside of the control arm and hinge the solid axle about the opposite wheel/ground interface. Still looking from the front or rear, note how much the lower end of the spring/shock mount point has moved left or right compared to the solid axle design. The solid axle's control arm is so long--compared to the IFS--that the spring and shock practically moves straight up and down. The spring perches (top and bottom) remain more parallel when the solid axle is flexed compared to the IFS. On the IFS, the spring wants to 'pop out' more easily as the wheel droops. This is what I like about IFS torsion bar 'springs' suspension…good packaging, and it solves the IFS coil-spring-deflection problem. But, even with torsion springs, the geometry of the IFS is too much to package (in my opinion) if it's designed to excel off-road.

I continue to read posts about people assuming SAS can be done for $2500. If you cheap out on everything, yes it can be done. It will not be reliable, it will not be effcient, it will not be able to do anything properly, why even invest into it?...

You don't just need an axle and Trail gears kit/Sky manufacturering's. THERE IS MORE TO A SAS.

Haha, I just watched extreme4x4 this morning and he did an old blazer (I think) and said it only costs $1500 to do a SAS. He said it was cheaper than doing a regular lift on the IFS. I laughed because I know how much it has cost people on here and he made it look like all you had to do wastake out the IFS and put in a solid axle. He kept saying how useless the IFS is for offroading and how all you are going to do is break stuff whenever you wheel it. He also left the double stacked block lift in the rear......

Yeah, those are just simple builds to the axle itself, axle builds costs $1k-4k. Rear axle is even cheaper.

Mine's a realistic look at if you researched, and bought every part and had a shop do the work. Everyone's look at price is different, we all would love to build a truck for $3k, but than everyone and their dog would be driving a SAS truck.

I sadly had a shop do it.. I was there time to time, but I've spent so much time reading about SA's, and I still don't know shit compared to the people over on TTORA or Pirate 4x4. I read every comment and thread they've created, 3x.

Oh btw, 9k? Dude you can do a SAS for $1,500...

Right on. That's more or less the route I'm going, and that's about where I'm gonna be, costwise...perhaps a little higher, because I opted for a setup more akin to Icon's Stage 3.
