Hey look I'm even in that thread :D

Just remember, doesn't matter what axle, or tires, they are still jeeps that are throttle happy

Anyway, interested in your thoughts here... I sure as hell hope a D60 F/R, if not, go back to the drawing board. What size tires? You installing a crawl box, links? What is it!! :D

Personally I wouldn't even bother with a D60 rear. D60 rears have mostly all 30 spline axles unless you go with a semi-float axle but no one does that if you want 1 tons :D You do get a bigger ring gear than a Toyota axle which is good but you'll have to upgrade the axle shafts in some way or another. The benefit is LOW axle gear ratios :)

Build a 14 bolt, I worked on mine today  5.38 thick gears and ARB are installed minus the pinion

It's booger weldz old 4 door that he sold. I have a couple more. My buddy built the badass tire carrier that uses a winch at the third brake light to raise and lower  They plan to get rid of the 3/4 elliptical setup and install coilovers.

Let's just say, I've been bit by the bug. And for the first phase, it wont be anything insane. Just enough to get me rolling and finally say I did a SAS on a 2nd gen.

We have front D44's with lockers lying around here that could be put to better use. Full float 35 spline D60's in the future, but for the tires I want to run (37's) the stock Toyota rear housing with a trussed/sleeved/gussetted D44 up front will be fine with a few adjustments (ring/pinion, regear, lockers, etc). Thinking King 2.5" IBP resi coilovers up front, PSC hydro steer, custom shackle mounts in the rear with a custom Deaver pack, caged bed for upper shock mounts (possibly building to adapt to links in the future), and definitely going with some mud terrains on beadlocks. :)

As far as the t-case goes, I'd love to put in a TacoBox "Taco Supreme" with 4.70 ratio mated to a 1 piece rear shaft like Wyatt's, and a 1350 CV front shaft.

I want to keep the truck looking like a truck and not a trail rig. It's going to still be my daily driver, so 40's are out of the question until I can buy a commuter. With that being said, I'm planning on running Glassworks front fenders and flat bedsides, and finding a way to keep the Bestop would be nice.

I just know I'll be running into a buttload of electronic issues such as ABS sensors throwing codes for the VSC, Auto LSD, Steering alignment light, etc. Not really looking forward to all that.

Wait lemme make sure I hear this right. You are gonna go through the work of a SAC and waste your time with a D44 and reuse the stock rear end that isn't even locked?

You sir belong in the FAIL thread.

I'll keep my Full float 35 Spline D60 rear and my extra clearance over a shaved 14Bolt any day of the week.
You are right...you've gotta find the right axle or do the work to the one you can find, but I still believe its a better option over the 14bolt.

I do wish I could set up my damn gears as easy as you can on a 14bolt though!

I lost track thousands of dollars ago.

I would at least do the D-60 for the front from the get go you don't want to do it twice trust me. You don't need to run 40's with the 60. I DD my rig just fine and I linked both ends. don't put int he 44 on a 2nd Gen you will be braking shit left and right.

Yeah $600. It'll get me by for the time being until I can save up for some nice tires.

Yeah you did the same thing I did with the last D60 rear I had (but sold). Bored out the spindles to accept 35 spline shafts :D Really happy I got the 14 bolt! The only special shims you need are for the pinion and the pinion unbolts with 6 bolts, the shims sit behind there. The adjusters give you proper backlash. It's really no wonder why people are turning them into front axles!

Can you elaborate on that a bit? I work with JK's all day long that run 37's on built D30's, so I'm wondering why the 44 wouldn't work in the 2nd gen? Just curious, I'm still learning about how these behave in the Toyotas.

And yeah a built RockJock 60 would really be nice, but I can't swing that just yet.

37's on D30's....bahahahaha. They must wheel "hard" alright

    I've watched stock 31's bust D30 shafts.

he wishes he wouldnt have wasted his time doing a d44, now has a built d60 f+r ready to go in

Look at Erics 1st gen...he wheels hard. He is way lighter than us and its fully built and he hasn't really had any issues, but....HE STILL WISHES HE WENT WITH A 60 INSTEAD.

We are really just trying to help you. Its a big enough job to do once, let alone twice.
