headed to CO late Sept

I'm looking for some trails to go drive that are close to Denver. My truck is an all stock TRD off road. I'm not looking for anything too crazy since it will probably be just my wife and I. Any suggestions from the CO people?

depending on how comfortable you are off-road, your truck could easily handle a 4 rated trail, maybe a 5.

Those all look like fun. My wife will be the one i need to convince. We drove this one ( http://www.traildamage.com/trails/index.php?id=74 ) 3 years ago in her Honda Accord. She was a little freaked out by the cliffs and hills.

Would these trails be suitable if it was just my wife and I on the trail? or would i need to have someone with me in another vehicle?

The days we are looking at are either Friday Sept 30th or Monday October 3rd. This will be my first time truly off road. If anyone would like to go with us, let me know.

I could probably go the 2nd, the only problem is I will be really hung over. We are going to the great American beer festival the night before. That is why i was trying to avoid that day.

This will be my other problem. My wife will freak out with a trail like this.

 

i did a bunch of trails up near idaho springs (OMG road, pickle gultch, and russel gultch) before my lift and tires and only had to get winched out cause i tried to go through 3 feet of snow. thats mostly gone now, so you should be good to go. beautiful views from anywhere out there.

 

last i heard webster still is not passable all the way through due to a massive snow drift...and winter in the high country is around the corner so make sure you check before you go...

When my wife and I did St. Johns trail Aug 7, we saw 2 people skiing with their dog chasing them down the snow!

 

I wonder if that will melt by the end of Sept. I'll have to keep checking on it. Thanks for the update.

 

I did russel gultch over Oh my god road last weekend and was able to drive all the way up to The Frontenac Mine, Didnt have to put the truck in 4 wheel but for one switch back and very very short climb. Great views from behind the mine.

 

By end of sept you might find that the tops of peaks are snowpacked by this years new snow, keep and eye out cause storms come up quick out here. Dowhilling season ends end of sept cause they start to get to cold and snowy, and usually loveland ski resort is open right around halloween.

 

That was the one thing i was worried about. I'm hoping the weather is nice while we are there. I know the weather changes quickly in the high country.

 

Multiply that by 10 with Colorado. 2 months ago I was up near Kingston Peak, 44 degrees, snow, rain, hail. It was 103 in Denver.

 

It really depends on what your comfort level is. If you're just looking for fantastic mountain scenery, and you're all Midwest, and this is your first trip to the big (and I mean BIG) mountains, I say check out Rollins Pass East, Chinn's Lake & Loch Lomond.

All will get you way up high into some beautiful mountain scenery and will give you a great introduction to exposure and some cliffs and minor obstacles, but not so much as to overwhelm you or your stock truck. Sometimes people get out to Colorado and get in way over their heads, and it ends up not being fun. But these 3 are great introductions. And then you can go up from there.

More difficult but should be well within the abilities of a stock TRD 4x4 in the same area... Just take water crossings slow unless you've done the rear diff breather mod (easy to do).

Just remember to not push yourself and take it slow. Especially with the wife in tow!

 

Do you need an OHV decal to drive on these trails?

I'll be heading up to Boulder the 2nd week of October and was looking for some ideas on which trails to do.

 

Only if your truck isn't street legal. If you have plates, you're good.

 

Rollins Pass looks like fun. I'm going to talk it over with my wife tonight.
