    This x1000!
$15.00 for the license/test, and about $30-40 for an inexpensive hand held radio.

100% agree, even those $30-40 hand helds will perform a gazzilionbillion times better then a average CB setup

Where did you find that? Maybe I was looking at something completely wrong, but everything I saw was $500+

You can find the baofeng handhelds on Amazon or ebay for that price. I think they were $25 w/ free shipping just before Christmas.

Handheld ham radios are nice also because you can take it with you should you exit your rig for any reason. I also have a Yeasu ft2900r mobile that I got for around $150 on sale at gigaparts. Com. Ham radio outlet also has frequent sales.

Are these ham setups really worth the trouble for someone who is only going to use it a few times a year on tail runs?

Thinking the same... I know Matt has CB, I just ordered the rest of the shit I need for my set-up. And now I'm so confused.. I know we used FM when I was EMS1 for SEMSA.. But for wheeling trips, I think CBs would be sufficient. Shit I was going to use 2-way if it came down to it.

Considering CB is generally line of sight I think the ham is a far superior for of communication. For example our group was split in 2 on an all day trail run, and the only comm I had was cb, but because the front half of the group was around a few bends in the canyon I couldn't reach anybody. Then even the back half of the group got split up. Even though we were much closer we still couldn't even communicate within ourselves. Ness to say after I winches myself and 3 others out, the 2nd half of the back group finally got themselves pulled out of the ice and met up with us and we continued on to meet the front group. However with a ham we could've got a hold of them for help. One last example of distance was last weekend I was out with some friends running g around peavine and dog valley and was able to talk to friends I cold springs as well as east sparks on simplex from the trail. I have also talked from Ichthyosaur State Park to a guy in Silver Springs with my handheld, although that was via the Mt. Rose repeter. So for the $45 investment between test and radio i personally think it's worth it.

Also ham and cb cannot talk. They are on separate frequencies

Also keep in mind proper antenna and antenna tuning are key in any communications.

I haven't committed to any trip yet. Keeping my options open for now. I get one "grand road trip" per year.

This looks pretty cool though.

    Subbed.

Tj, Have you been up recently through Winecup and into to Gamble? I know that Gamble is always locked up. I'm curious if it's possible to get around Gamble from up North of Crinton?
Also, my father knows a road the will take us from Crinton al the way to the Salt flats, if you guys want to accommadate that in there

Its been two years since I was up past the Winecup, I heard Crittenden was all locked up. I was thinking there is the road that takes off just south of Jackpot that goes up around thousand springs. I will have to take a look at my map when I get home.
