I highly recommend the 2900r. I'm running that in my truck. It's a real solid radio and a workhorse.

 

How's the speaker on that? Mine has a front facing speaker and that was one of the determining factors in me getting mine. And is that screen covered by plastic or anything. I remember touching one and it distorts like LCD stuff. I didn't like that either.

The speaker is pretty loud we had it in front of the shifter in that space on the second gen and it was pretty loud and clear. The screen has no protection unfortunately. What sold me on it was the price at the time and a few members and employees there told me they would go yaesu.

 

Yours, my kenwood, and the icomv8000 were all in the same price range. It was a hard decision. IMO you can't go wrong with these 3 brands.

Yeah those 3 are probably the best bang for your buck. I prefer 2m over race Radios, because you can always change the channel on a 2m unlike a preset on race.
