Quoted from facebook, TW member and friend Shane flopped his truck on it's side earlier this afternoon in the Death Valley, Trona area. Somehow, he was able to get it back on 4 wheels, but upon starting the truck it died after 5 seconds. I helped him diagnose it to be a hydro-lock from oil in the combustion chambers, he got the oil out, but now the truck wont start. He suspects the battery died, but we do not know if he has damaged the internals. Possibly need a tow truck, might just need a jump. He is completely alone, no passengers, no other vehicles with him.

He needs to get back home...anybody in that area willing to help out a fellow TW member?

If you can help, please PM me so I can contact him on facebook, since that seems to be his only form of communication at this point (oddly enough).

UPDATE: Good news and bad news...

Jumping didn't get it started, sounds like internal failure somewhere from hydro-lock.

Two offroaders are escorting him down the trail now to the main road where a tow truck can get to him.

Well the first thing you should do is notify the Death Valley Nat. Park rangers.

But there is a TW member who I believe is a Ranger at the Red Rock Canyon State Park which is near Ridgecrest.

His forum screen name is Maticuno.

I "think" the ranger service helped him get on all 4 tires again, but they couldn't help him any more...I "think" that's what happened. Not quite sure. I do not believe he is within DVNP boundaries.

Just PM'ed Maticuno...thanks for the referral.

It could be nothing more than a dead battery...problem is that we don't know. Calling a wrecker could be very expensive if he just needs a jump. A TW member could strap up and tow him down to the road where a flatbed can get him easier.

The spot he's at looks ok to tow him out with a strap, if the jump doesn't get him running.

Bump. My question is how the heck did he flip it and why would he go wheeling alone?

(just for the sake of bumping)

i'm constantly deep in the middle of some national forest by myself
i'm not "wheeling" by any means, mainly just exploring (i'm not claiming this isn't a bad idea)
i've got all sorts of recovery and camping gear in the truck, at all times
but, this sort of thing almost inspires me to get a smart-phone; there's generally NOT service out in the mountains i'm in, but, i'm continually surprised that there is, indeed, some random spots where i get cell reception

I don't know any of the details, how he flipped, how he got back over...all I'm interested in in the time being is getting him home safe to his wife and two boys.

I'm sure they will explore all options tomorrow if/when those two 4x4 club members reach him in the morning.

Shane's one tough SOB like I said, I've seen him chase off a pack of coyotes that woke him up in the middle of the night to raid our camp while he was sleeping outside on the ground with no tent on our Death Valley Trip (I ran like a sissy girl). It sounds like he's well prepared, has tools, food, water, supplies to last him a few more days if need be. It's his nature to explore and tough it out. If anything, this is a great test of his experience in the desert.

He's already posted that if no help comes tomorrow, he's going to hike down to the nearest town he can find.

I feel bad for the guy. I hope someone can help him find a way out, with his truck too. Wish I had more off-roading/recovery experience to be a help. For now I'll send some positive vibes out to him!

This is borderline BS. The forest rangers helped him flip his truck back, but left him?

I know exactly where that spot is. That's in South park canyon on the trail up to Suitcase mine. The road is very sketchy. In fact I had to get out of my truck and walk part of it because I was afraid I was going to flop it.
