Just thought I would pass on the info.

There is a HAM radio test set up in San Diego on the 15th of November. You have to contact them ahead of time, no walk-ins. Just send an email to papatesting@live.com and they will give you directions on how to sign up and where it is. It took me about 5 minutes to get everything set up.

What does a HAM radio test even do?

You do realize just because you buy a HAM radio, doesn't automatically make you licensed to use one, right?

Apparently they didn't want an answer.... deleted their own comment before anyone else would see

I wasn't paying attention and responded to wrong thread.

Im curious as to why you are asking that though. I don't own a radio, I am getting my license by taking the required test so I can get into it. Then I plan to get a radio.

Because most people (including myself) are not licensed to use the radio and wanted to make sure those who may participate don't get fined for joining.

Lol, gotcha. Yeah figured I would go about the right way of doing it. It's really cheap to get licensed and from what I have read in different threads in here its pretty easy to pass the test with some of the study guides out there.

I used QRZ's practice tests before I got my licenses. Site wants you to create an account now but its easy and the tests are multiple choice. They give you the correct answer if you guess wrong.

I studied for two days and passed with a perfect score on my technicians exam. These are the resources I used.

I read the no nonsense technician class study guide.
    http://www.kb6nu.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/09/2014-no-nonsense-tech-study-guide-v1.1.pdf

And I took practice exams using the Ham Test Prep app.
    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.iversoft.ham.test.prep&hl=en

The test costs 15 bucks to take. If you fail, they may offer you a free retest. If you pass they may offer you the General class license exam. I didn't study for the general license and failed.

You can search for exams in your area here:

Test was super easy, only studied about an hour and I missed 3 questions. The free apps from the apple store were awesome and helped the most.

Definitely recommend getting out there and taking the test, took less than 20 minutes to take the test, had results 10 minutes later.

Did research today and found that the Mormon Church in Bonita also hosts the test every Saturday for $5. Will be taking the General test in a few weeks.

    Congrats.

I got my license about a year ago. Its a fun hobby and the best way to communicate at a TW meet.

They were all free ones, go into the app store and search HAM Tech. I used the one by James Thomas and Roy Watson.
