hey guys So I just got my truck back from the dealership*brought it in because of loud knocking noise under my truck*, and the dealership tech said he can't figure out what the noise is. He said try using different gas other then arco. I like using arco because I get free gas from my work. Is arco bad for our tacomas? If so what gas station do you guys perfer in SD? Also if arco isn't bad, I use 87, can I use another grade instead of 87? Thanks in advance guys!

Real answer or BS answer? Real answer is NO. ARCO is fine.
BS answer. ARCO gas is horrible, there are master mechanics everywhere who agree that it will destroy your fuel system and cause knocks. There is water in ARCO gas and that's why its cheaper.

Real answer. Most petrol companies hates ARCO gas because they sell gas for cheaper. They usually put out smear campaigns like the BS above to persuade people into buying form Exxon, Chevron, etc, etc. ARCO gas is cheaper because their business model cuts out some of the BS and middle men in the industry as well as not accepting credit cards (that usually costs fees).

Try from a different gas station than the one you're going to if you're worried about it. I doubt it would be the case that their cells got contaminated. Have you ran any mods on your truck? Are you using the right octane for your motor? If you're getting a lot of knocks and pings, then I'd be worried about fuel as you may be getting pre-ignition/detonation.

I've done a mod or two
Nope, filled my Maxima and Explorer (traded) with ARCO exclusively for 9 years, till I moved. Even my Taco gets some ARCO when I'm near one, it's just gas (all held to the same standard).

Used Arco all the time when I lived in CA. Never had an issue.

BTW, there is a local fuel depot nearby. I see a line of Sheetz, Shell, Exxon, BP, etc. trucks in the same line to fill up their tanker trucks from the same fill hoses.

91 isn't going to clean anything out. All octane ratings are, are resistance to heat. The higher the octane, the more resistance to heat which may prevent pre-ignition/detonation in your combustion chamber. Trust me, our Tacos are not hot motors. Corvettes, Vipers, sport bikes need 91 octane or higher because the motors are hot and high performance. If one is running super lean, they may need higher octane to band aid the problem which isn't really a solution.
If you want to clean your system some, just buy something like a bottle of Lucas and pour it in during next fill up. You can run higher octane if you want but its going to be a waste of money.

It really depends on just going to a gas station that gets filled up often by the trucks. I have my car tuned pretty aggressive and it only knocks if I go to a gas station that isn't typically busy. Just run some fuel cleaner every once in a while to clean up the fuel ports to help out with efficiency.

It shouldn't be and I filled up on it for years.

And then I went to an ARCO station and didn't even make it out of the parking lot before I knew I had water in my gas. Made it home and drained the tank, refilled from a different station, all was well.

Not an ARCO issue, but a station issue. They closed about a month later.

Usually hit G&M in Oceanside or Valero (I own stock lol). But nothing inherently wrong with ARCO gas, it's the same stuff everyone else sells unless the station adulterates it - and you really can't blame ARCO for that.

Tesoro brought bp a few years back, but still reinforces same gas just different detergents at each station.

Tesoro, arco, shell, Exxon, Mobil, USA, and a good chunk of Costco all the same gas. My buddy works for tesoro as a trucker.
