Then he said "we were bought by Panasonic and you may be let go in three months, how do you feel about that?" very strange questions, haven't had that experience in the 100 or so interviews under my belt. The HR department had asked me more about my experiences in IT and qualifications than he did. A couple days went by and my recruiter called me with the bad news. He said "they said you were too good for them!" I've heard of overqualified but never "too good" I asked well, did they hire someone else? he said no, there is a freeze on all hiring at Sanyo, apparently we all just went for a ride. What a waste of everybody's time!
This ploy is nothing new, waaaaaay back in the late 70's & thru part of the 80's (yeah I know ,right after the wheel was invented) a few big companies : Rohr, Solar, Teledyne Ryan & others used to do what they called a "Labor Market Survey" Where they would advertise the illusion of pending contracts requiring the mass hiring of new employees, the reality of it was that there were NO contracts pending & they were testing the waters for a true number of unemployed in San Diego, its a supply & demand thing, more unemployed than actual available work is a plus for them determining what they will offer for starting wages... I actually had a gal in the HR dept. tell me "Oh, we're not hiring just accepting applications." Yeah, thats just what I wanted to hear after borrowing monet for gas to drive 25 miles for a job that didn't exist.... translation : They are just wasting your time now as they did then.... hope some of this makes sense....
