Classified clearance

Evil Monkey,

When I worked for the Navy, in my office which was inside of a classified space, we were allowed to have Classified and Unclassified computers under our desk as long as they were physically 4 feet apart. This included the keyboard and monitors, also 4 feet apart. Apparently the contract requires un escorted access to classified spaces. Rules are rules even when they don't make sense. Seems so ridicoulous that our government spent 92K to investigate and approve my top secret clearance but the management idiots at HP won't pay a living wage for their people! Go figure

I'm well known

Evil Monkey,

They (APEX) contacted me by a junior recruiter, his boss was the person who made the effort to get my clearnce upgraded to top secret when I worked for them at the Navy contract position. The Navy job did not require a TS. My EDS (an HP Company) boss at the time in Coronado was pissed and asked why I was applying for TS? Asked him a simple question "should I refuse to upgrade my clearance" he said " well, no I wouldn't personally" and he dropped it at that point. Besides, I'm on many clearance sites and my name is unique in this country

I would suggest reducing your background experience on the application a bit and make sure your past wages are about equal or less than your asking wage.

Is there any work In San Diego?

Anybody been hired lately? part time? Did three interviews for Sanyo but the last two were wierd. The IT director never asked me one technical question, he just rambled on about being a full time employee and wondered if I'd like that. BSed about being a company man and wanting to be a member of the team. Then he said "we were bought by Panasonic and you may be let go in three months, how do you feel about that?" very strange questions, haven't had that experience in the 100 or so interviews under my belt. The HR department had asked me more about my experiences in IT and qualifications than he did. A couple days went by and my recruiter called me with the bad news. He said "they said you were too good for them!" I've heard of overqualified but never "too good" I asked well, did they hire someone else? he said no, there is a freeze on all hiring at Sanyo, apparently we all just went for a ride. What a waste of everybody's time!

sounds you s like a bad case of "Equal Employment Opportunity" if they are not asking you a set round of questions then it's against the law. everyone is afforded the same opportunity as everyone else and that includes the interview questions. You can sue them for not interviewing correctly and you should take that very seriously! They blow you off like that then get back at them and donít let them play you like a fool!

This ploy is nothing new, waaaaaay back in the late 70's & thru part of the 80's (yeah I know ,right after the wheel was invented) a few big companies : Rohr, Solar, Teledyne Ryan & others used to do what they called a "Labor Market Survey" Where they would advertise the illusion of pending contracts requiring the mass hiring of new employees, the reality of it was that there were NO contracts pending & they were testing the waters for a true number of unemployed in San Diego, its a supply & demand thing, more unemployed than actual available work is a plus for them determining what they will offer for starting wages... I actually had a gal in the HR dept. tell me "Oh, we're not hiring just accepting applications." Yeah, thats just what I wanted to hear after borrowing monet for gas to drive 25 miles for a job that didn't exist.... translation : They are just wasting your time now as they did then.... hope some of this makes sense....

Work hard, someone will benefit

I have done over a hundred interviews in NJ, NY and CA for IT jobs. It seems that luck and a family connection is what you need most. Having a great deal of skill and talent only gaurauntees to get some interest in you as a resource to use. As far as being recognized or rewarded for ability is whole other matter. Without some hard work, a break and a hand up into mangement there is not much reality to expect reward on just hard work and talent alone, the sixtys are over. In fact I see in corporate America today an institutionalized plan to strip away anything useful from an employee and a policy not to reward accomplishment with anything tangable. From my observation it seems that management sees rewarding any employee as unnecasary, besides it upsets the less gifted and productive employee's moral affecting overall production and profit. These policies are not an accident. In any organization the leadership has the power to fill their pockets faster at the common man's expense, nothing new really.
After 12 years and 64 full time and contract positions nothing really shocks me. A job where I am appreciated and paid well with benefits making use of my talents would be a great shock! One job I did for Quest Diagnostics had 28 regional Systems Engineers nationwide each receive a $5K bonus for me overcoming all obstacles on an Active Directory conversion for the company which I did with my team on time and on budget alone without support. None of the Quest employees helped in any way, more like they got in the way if they could. The director of Client Engineering desperately tried to stop me because he couldn't take credit for me doing what essentially was his departments job. It was like a war going on behind the scenes about who should get funding, benefits, prestige and the bonusses for my teams work. What did my team get? the last weeks paycheck and a thank you. Oh and "if you need any references kid, don't hesitate to send them my way"
Stephen

Why is that not interviewing "correctly"? There aren't any rules concerning interviewing style or a specific set of questions that have to be asked. The only time it would be inappropriate was if he or she asked about your feelings on moral/religious issues. He could have just been probing his general character to see if he'll fit in with the team. If his qualifications are vetted before he sees the IT director, then it's very possible that the director didn't need to ask. And just because someone is a director, that doesn't mean they necessarily are up to speed on the technology. It just means they manage the IT group. I'm sorry but unless you can point to clear discrimination, you'd be laughed out of court.

I finally got work, actually better than work, a real old school job! GD IT hired me in two days for a Network Administrator position in Coronado, CA. They sure were in a rush. Took advantage and asked for a little more money and got it. Kind of cocky I know after not working for so long but had to ask, couldn't hurt! You only get one chance before hiring then it's a 2% a year raise if you're lucky. Got my final Unemployment check last week, talk about down to the wire! My TS clearance would have gone inactive this august so I was incredibly lucky. I got the whole deal, salary, benefits, holidays off, the works! First time after 12 years in the IT world any company offered me benefits, woohoo! This is job number 65 in my IT career, hope it's a long term gig this time.

Well, I'm back in this boat again.
I got laid off at 10 AM today.

But, I have an initial meeting with my buddy at Hunter Insurance in El Cajon today.
He says he's looking for people, so maybe this will be worth it.

Honestly, I couldn't be happier about today.
This was the first time I've ever gotten a severance check. haha
