Help decide on clipless pedals

I am looking at these 3 different clipless pedals. They will go on my hardtail mountain bike that is used primarily for XC riding.

This will be my first time riding clipless, so i do not want to spend too much and i want something that is adjustable, so i can make them easy to get out of while i am getting used to it.

Here are the 3 i found that seem to be a good deal and good quality:

Wellgo M094B Sealed Bearing clipless pedals

Wellgo WPD 410 sealed bearing pedals

Crank Brothers Candy X pedals

 

One other i am considering:

Wellgo W44B sealed bearing pedals

I like that they can be used as a normal pedal on one side and clipless on the other....

 

I would go with the Crank Brothers, I ride Stainless Steel Eggbeaters. The CB pedals get easier to clip in and out the more you use them (the brass clip wears down allowing for easier clipping in and out). Sometimes when you use adjustable ones you can accidentally clip out when you are trying to pedal when you are pedaling.

 

Heard a lot of good things of Crank Brother pedals the Egg beaters look neat and sturdy so I'm sure these ones are of pretty nice quality.

 

I ride egg beaters and have no complaints, but do find the Time pedals easier to get in/out of consistently (though it doesn't look like any are in your acceptable price range). Don't know what kind of terrain you ride in your area, but on the gulf coast it's not uncommon to ride in mud. The egg beater/Time pedals are far better than the SPD style pedals at shedding sticky mud and working properly in bad conditions.

There are alot of mixed feelings about Crank Brothers pedals. Those who love them and those who absolutely hate them. Call me middle ground I ran Candy's for 9 months and switched to Shimano's due to some annoyances that I didn't like. Mainly when the wings wouldn't catch the cleat and just spin and your foot would slide off. No way to make that mistake with most other pedals like Look's, Time's, and Shimano's.

I don't think you can really make a bad choice out of Look, Time, Crank Brothers, or Shimano. I personally don't like the looks of the cheaper Wellgo's just step up for a pair of PD-M520's.

They seemed to be a good product for the money, and they have a small platform so i can take a quick ride with out my MTB shoes if needed.

Also the place i got them from has a great return policy, if i decide I do not like them...

 

have you looked into shimano? i road shimano for 5yrs and loved them way more than my buddy's crank brothers. i road these..expensive at REI but you can get em way cheaper other places. plus you can get clip-in platforms..i put a platform on one side of the pedal and left the other open so if i didn't have shoes i could still ride. you'd be pretty screwed if you tried to ride egg beaters with regular shoes

I looked into Shimano a little, but wanted to go with something less expensive to start.
The egg beaters i got have a platform so it will not be too bad to ride with regular shoes....i hope (for quick, on road rides anyway).
I occasionally ride my bike to the gym that is a couple miles away from my house, and would like to be able to do this in regular shoes.

 

I can't see spending the extra cash for a pair of XT pedals when they PD-M540s are cheaper and actually 3 grams lighter in the real world. Yes apparently the bearing races may be different between the two, but there are very few failures in the PD-M540 to begin with.

 

yea, i started with PD-M520's like tussery mentioned because they were damn fast to clip out..and lord knows i had to clip out hundreds of times before i got the hang of it

 

It can be done but isn't very comfortable. Candy pedals are not very big they aren't much larger than Shimano SPD pedals, and the wings still stick above the pedal about 1/2".

 

Well, hopefully it works out, they should be here this week. But if not, i can always return them and get something different...

 

I ride a pair of Ritchey's that look like these Wellgo WPD 410 sealed bearing pedals . I like it because I can pedal through the really technical stuff without being "clipped" by pedaling with my arches.

 

If you want I have a pair of plastic platforms that clip into Crank Brothers Candy's you can have them, just shoot me a PM with your address.

 

I ride the Candies and have no complaints. The "egg beater" design is very easy to clip in to from any position.

 

My buddies wanted me to convert to clipless pedals. I tried them. I just could not get comfortable with Eggbeaters and decided to go back to platform pedals and a set of Vans.

I just don't feel comfortable with clipless pedals of technical trails. I guess I just lack coordination.

 

Does anyone know if you can use the cleats that come with egg beaters in other style pedals like Shimano or Wellgo, and visa versa, use Shimano or Wellgo cleats in the egg beaters?

Nevermind...just did a little research, and answered my own question.

You cannot use CB cleats in other types of pedals....
