^ one of the local TW guys has something similar for his tent. They are a pain to get in the ground. The head of the stake chews up what ever you are using - mallet, rock, log. I have the steel REI stakes...after bending the original aluminum ones that came with my tent into all sorts of shapes I wanted something stronger. I've camped on damn near solid granite slabs and they have yet to disappoint. They're certainly not light though!

 I said they weren't light! I'm more about function I guess...when my first tents stakes started to look like pretzels I wanted something that could take a little abuse. Oh, and I carry 9 of them...4 for the tent, 4 for the fly and a spare.

I've been using the MSR tent stakes.

I like how they work in mostly solid ground. They suck in soft ground and I'm certain snow or sand wouldn't work.

I know what you mean about the pretzel looking stakes. I hate those cheapo stakes they give you with the tent.
Thanks. I will generally be in solid ground. I have some of those bags that you bury in the sand for that type of camping.

The bags are a great idea. I bet they'd work in a windy place too (at least help). I have also been trying out a slightly larger "nail" like stakes that seem better in soft earth--jury is still out on them.

Surprised with all the concern with weight reduction that titanium nails haven't been brought up. Used to alpine allot when I was younger and single and weight was always an easy conversation starter. We didn't have the really cool materials that you have now so stretching, soggy nylon was the norm. I ran some home-made custom made titanium nails back then - early 90's - and loved them for quick setting, staying straight, and of course the low weight of them. The ones I linked after a quick Google search look so nice I grabbed ten for old times sake as we are hoping to take delivery of our AT Flippac sometime early next year and I'll need something to stake out the Kelty car tarp I bought to hang off the back of it using aircraft type anchor points.

I've used them camping in the Colorado Rockies and Wyoming, never had a problem getting them in the hard ground and they held my tent down well...

Yeah I was checking Amazon because things are usually cheaper there and they were about $20 for 8. I saw some for even more.
