Ultimate Ski/Snowboard Interest thread!!!

Hey all, I'm hoping to connect with other big mountain and/or diseased skiers like myself. I couldn't find any real skiing/snowboard interest threads at all, so I figured I'd start one.

This is the place to talk about anything skiing related, be it gear/purchases, edits, snow reports, secret stashes, favorite resorts, anything about your own skiing/snowboarding life.

(FYI, I originally started this thread with specific ski gear questions, and it has evolved, but just know that's why some of the immediate responses may not make as much sense now)

 

I have skied the JJ and S7. The JJ 185 is nice but is too soft for me. I skied the S7 in a 188 and liked it in the pow but not so much on crud. The JJ was more of a playful ski also. I am 5'6'' and just bought some Moment Bibby Pros 184 because they are stiffer than both the JJ and S7, and they rip. A guy brought in some 195 S7s the other day to get mounted and I was surprised at how flexible they were considering the metal sheet in the core. Also, the JJ 185 skis real short, so depending on how tall you are.....

i'm a team rider for Icelantic and can hook up deals in the fall. they're pretty much sold out on pro-form this season but check them out if you want to ride something based and made local in colorado instead of china!

 

I know it's skiing, not meaning to impose and all. You got connections with Never Summer at all?

 

negative. they just do the manufacturing for Icelantic. They're pressing for a few companies now and i've been nothing but impressed with the quality.

 

i'll vouch for the icelantics too...lotsa energy, quick turns, stable

 

I'm about 6'2" but a scrawny 160 lbs, and ski very very aggressively. I think the metal in the Super 7's is more for dampening and pop more than stiffness, or so a Rep told me. I skiied the S7's a few years ago in a 180-something and was very happy with them, but the rocker made them feel way short, thats why I;m considering the 195. Also, its interesting that they have a 140mm shovel in the front but are only 118 in the tail, which makes me wonder what they'd be like for harder or backseat landings

 

I've never skiied an Icelantic, but would like to. I noticed a few years ago when they came out that all the lengths were pretty short, I guess thats changing some now.
I'm looking for a burly big mountain ski that can rip GS turns thru chop (which will of course be great in pow) and stomp drops, + high speed stability
Not familiar with the icelantic line-up, but from a brief look, The Keeper looks pretty sick
I'm also looking at the 190 Czar, which has rocker in the tip, but not in the tail, sweet

 

i'm 5'8" 155 lbs and i'm skiing on the new model introduced this year. "the keeper" in a 189. traditional camber, lots of side cut for groomers/crud and an early rise tip. i was thinking these would be my big day skis and i would use my others for day to day. so far i haven't taken out a different pair this season. i was touring backcountry on them the last two days and still took them up for a frozen groomer day today.
two weeks ago i got on the prototype for the new full rocker that'll be available next year. i should have my own by the end of the month so i'll be able to give a better review after hitting variable conditions but first impressions were really good.

My stats are: 25yo, 165lbs, 5'10"
Skiing since I could walk.
I ski Bridger Bowl and Moonlight Basin. Season pass to BB the past 5 years.
Head ski tech at a ski shop and also their bike shop Mgr.

My current list of skis include:
185 Nordica Raddict w/Rossi Axl 150, 183 Atomic Snoop w/Marker Duke, 181 K2 Hardside w/Marker duke, 181 Dynastar Slicer w/Marker Duke, 181 K2 Backlash w/Dynafit FT12, and some older 175 Volkl 6 stars for ripping groomers.

I've owned the 188 S7 for two seasons. I have also skied the 195. I didn't like the 195 as much. I thought it was too heavy with the added metal and had very little "pop" and kinda felt like a plank. I ski terrain that is generally pretty tight and very steep so the 195 was scratched off my list.

 

If you want a burly ski check out the Line Prophet 115, or the Atomic Atlas. Both ski big lines at high speeds well.

 

Yea, thats kinda I'm worried about. I'm a four inches taller tho. The 188 would probably be fine, but with that rocker they ski really short and Rossi measures short to begin with, hmmmm

 

Yea for sure, other options are the Volkl Katana, which is 111 underfoot and comes in a 190 and 197....Atlas is yet another choice, also the Line Mothership

Born and raised in Taos, NM
19 y/o , 6'2" ~160 lbs
Started skiing around 4 yrs old
Raced for 5 years....then quit to freeride and big mountain comps
Currently working as an instructor at Taos (home on break from Colorado College)
Having grown up in Taos, this is my home mountain, but have a Colorado Pass this year and have been skiing a lot at A-basin, Keystone, and Vail while at school (none of them really stand up to Taos fro steeps, haha, least what I've found so far) - also love Telluride, one of my favs

Only skis I have right now are some 179 K2 Kung Fujass's with Griffon Schizo bindings
They are fun, but....buttery as hell and scary when you're nuking through baked chop
- getting PSIA cert this week, and heading to Silverton on the 21st for level 1 Avi cert

Born/raised New Hampshire, living in Park City UT last ten years, now splitting time 50/50 between park city and vail colorado for work.

Skiing since age 2
ski racer for 7 years
ski jumper for 15 years
97/98' US ski team (junior national team)
98' qualified for olympic trials (1 of 15 but injured and didn't compete)
01 retired from competition
4th year riding for Icelantic skis (2nd on pro team) Freeride, BASE/Ski BASE jumping,

I have an epic pass for colorado and a canyons pass for utah but spend most of my time outside the resorts.

right now mounted i have Icelantic 189 keeper with free ride +, 2x 181 nomads with freeride, 168 nomads with look bindings and a pair of dynastar GS race stock hand me downs.
ride the keepers day to day and ski BASE the 181 and 168's
also have some old gotama's and mojo's kicking around.

The Line Prophet 115 is basically the Mothership's replacement. Line didn't want to get ride of the Mothership quite yet but brought in the 115 which is pretty much identical in construction but not a true twin tip. 2 layers of metal make it super stable at speed and the rockered tip plows through chop A traditional tail makes it ski like a true 186. Look for a longer 115 next year, probably.

 

Wow, did you do moguls or aerials in '97-'98?
