If you are working on being a LEO I would honestly go with jiu jitzu...something not so focused on "killing" or "brutally" eliminating a threat and breaking arms like Krav Maga is. (from what I've read about krav maga) Jiu jitsu is more common also, so quality instructors should be more common as well and the classes cheaper. I'd hate to react with muscle memory and break a guys arm while walking to my patrol car just cause he was drunk and trying to balance him self out.... Just saying, what you train for is what you'll do just from repetition. Maybe better to learn to control an assailant than to maim for some people's use. When I worked on a lock down facility in Montana we were trained to de-escalate a situation, and to detain without harming. That's what we had to do, and now as a soldier they don't would rather us not shoot or crush skulls. They want arrests and interrogation. Maybe talk to a few LEO's and see what they think???

Krav Maga is mainly about taking on more then one enemy, it is but it isnt geared towards seriously hurting people.

Its who you get teaching it, I had one teacher that I quit after the first week he was all gun ho about seriously hurting someone.

If I get into a altercation I just want to be able to defend myself/friend/family without going crazy.

Krav Maga has its bone breaking injury producing techniques but it has things from all skills too. It has ground fighting, weapons defense, self defense techniques and combatives. I've been through an academy, I want a little more under my belt then what is taught there (arrest control and control tactics). I can't always rely on a simple control tactic when I have a guy fighting me that wants to and has tried to take my life.

Glad to see this is an intelligent thread. I say that because of some recent run ins I had.... heres a couple...... the usual "bad ass" running his mouth that was talking shit about some guy who was wearing a tap out t-shirt. He was wearing a Krav shirt and thought that he was better then him. So I intervened just to stop the fight and then it turned to me, and yes I laid Krav guy OUT COLD. But he didn't learn because everytime I see this guy he still has something to say. LOL And then of course there is always the class' big guy that thinks because he weighs 350 and tries to muscle everyone around, yup ... didn't lay him out... but definitely turned the tables around on him and took him down a notch.... I will just leave it at that. Well I hope that I didn't come off as a bad a** but I just wanted to add these stories....... hope the thread keeps going in a positive direction.

Well IMHO Krav sounds pretty good, no first hand experience though. Sounds like the only REAL down after hearing what ya'll had to say about it is a lack of trainers out there.... Good luck to you whatever path you take. Remember that often the first guy with an armed (gun) buddy to show up wins... Partners rock! Take care out there guys.

Also remember, if your fighting street, their is no unfair fighting.

You fight to win, period.

People now days take it to far and could kill you in a stupid pointless street fight.

I remember my first encounter with krav maga, I tagged along with a friend to a seminar about it. The instructor took on 5 guys at once, it wasn't that one at a time crap either. I was like yep, this is what Im going to be taking. Because in reality now days there is almost always more then one person jumping on you.

Its sad, but its the truth.

Anyway whichever you pick just make sure your 100% down to do it and learn all you can!!

Krav Maga sounds interesting. I've been thinking about starting Ju Jitsu at a local studio - I prefer a style heavily geared towards grapling, which is generally where the fight ends up. When I was MUCH younger I spent time learing Judo, which was great for a kid as it really helped me with leverage, balancing, etc. I'll never forget the time in junior high when my buddy tried to tackle me on the playground (in fun, kids wrestling type thing). He was one of the biggest kids in the school (good to have as a friend!) - I ended up throwing him down, surprising both of us! I think I ran off, almost peed my pants laughing - but figured he was gonna try and get me back for that!

Anyway - after that (much later), studied AKKA Kenpo, which I love - a very violent, steet fighting type of Karate introduced by Ed Parker (heavy influence from Jeet Koon Do - Bruce Lee). However, I cannot find a local studio, so my choices are limited.

Sogo Goshin Do

Sogo Goshin Do
anyone here familiar with this system?
AFAIK there are only 4 dojo's in the USA three in the South East one in Ohio
I'd rather not hear about the "suspect" lineage, only about the art and techniques themselves
thanks

ive been doing jiu jitsu for about 2 years now and i just got my blue belt. I can tell you that you will get addicted. i started going to get in shape and now im doing tournaments and going about 5-6 days a week. it whipped me into shape that ive never been in before.
I would recommend jiu jitsu to anyone. all of the submissions and tecniques are useable in self defense situations, especially since 90% of physical altercations end up on the ground. Plus alot of places that teach jiu jitsu also teach boxing, kick boxing, wrestling and muay thai.
if you are looking for a place make sure you do research. try a couple different places and see what instructer fits you best. its really important. Ask who they are affiliated with (many gyms are affiliated with some big name in the game). If a gym is affiliated with a high profile name alot of the time they are a good gym. I would also look for a smaller gym. they generally have less students so they can spend more one on one time with you. Also alot of the time smaller gyms have people who come all the time instead of the larger gyms who have alot of people who come and go weekly and monthly.
The gym i go to is affiliated with Marcelo Garcia, who is the number one pound for pound jiu jitsu competitor in the world right now. we are also a small gym with only about 30 students who actually show up on a regular basis. This is the kind of gym i prefer and think many people have success in.
