The fat part of my boats are between the racks and the fat tiedown straps I use don't allow for any movement but I also use a straps on each boat that are tied to the boat and to each rack for extra safety to keep boat from going forward or backward. The whole rack would have to come off the truck before the boats come off the racks. They are tight & secure but not smashing the boats. The racks sit on top of the bedsides and connect to the bed rails with 8 of these........

Who's going to still be kayaking through the winter? Hung up the kayak a month ago since school and now weather is keeping me from doing it.

Sure, I meant bow/stern lines in addition to tying the boat to each rack bar.

So I guess we have to rely on the bed rails to hold the whole rack with the weight and added wind resistance... I'm just paranoid, I never lost a boat off a roof rack, but I have lost a roof rack off a roof!

    Thanks!

I have wetsuit for surfing so I'd be up for it whenever I can drag anyone else but not very motivated unless being able to get someone else to go too. It's OK to do a solo trip like that just for your own perciverance thing but isn't generally very wise to make habit of it and not very rewarding beyond doing it a coupla times. Same thing goes for going at night or out in the ocean, very cool with more people but kinda spooky by yourself.....not that I haven't, lol. Now, night in the ocean in the winter by myself, forget about it.

Yep, almost never too cold to kayak in central Texas... We usually draw the line when it goes below 40F, maybe once or twice a year... The only upside of the recent heat and resulting drought...

I drove 7 hrs to San Angelo at 70 in a 20-30mph headwind with both of them up there and they never budged a bit. The rack is super sturdy and is rated to 400 lbs using the adapters/bedrails. Extra d-rings up front with the rack tied to them would add even more security and alleviate any paranoia. ;)

That does make me feel better about it!...

San Angelo... so you're in Texas too? That picture sure looks like Texas, in all of its burnt glory...

Oh yeah, TX. Far west H-town. Do a good bit of mt biking in your neck of the woods. Been too long tho. Got a buddy that lives up by Lago Vista on the lake too kinda by that off road park going towards Marble Falls (but I think I need 4wd for that). But yeah, TX, I go all over. Want to go check out Palo Duro area on my next trip AND KAYAK somewhere there too. Whew, borderline threadjack......:D

My Kayak is kind of old (and dirty), I think I seen a stamp on it 1976 (maybe its an antique!), but it gets me on the water. I need a bigger one, this one is only 13', and in some big seas it can get a little dicey. I need a proper sea kayak, maybe 17' or something, and some safety features like float bags or bulkheads, which my current boat has none of. I think that P&H makes some nice sea kayaks......others to probably

Cool! We are looking at moving away in a couple of years, getting tired of the heat and lack of seasons... But it has a lot to offer, and if you come from a cold place, it might just be the right place for you!

RedGudger, that looks like the Northeast or East coast, somewhere between Terra Nova and Baie Verte... I'd guess Springdale, Botwood or TNNP, maybe?

Is that a recent photo, ice from the disintegrating ice island?
Or just average spring pack ice?
My family's from Trinity Bay, and I led Nature tours to Terra Nova, Southport, A.A.T.C. (all around the circle - could be a new expo logo).
Love the area, you're lucky to call it home.
    Cheers

No it is not the ice island, it is just spring pack ice. I think the pic was last year (or maybe the year before)
