Mountain Bike help...

Looking at getting into mountain biking. I've looked at Treks and I am pretty sure thats what I want to pick up unless I find a Giant or Specialized with similar specs. I have found this one locally want to see if you guys can help me. If there is anything else I should look for, if this one sounds like a great way to start, etc? Suggestions welcome.

The only mountains this bike has seen are mountains of laundry and medical bills.
Unfortunately a health problem has prevented me from using it

but if this is going to be your first mtb then trek does make a nice one. just check for rust and such. make sure the wheels spin without any noticable drag from the hubs (indicating the bearing inside isnt good) but since its only been ridden twice i dont see how much could be wrong with it.

I've got the 2011 wahoo and there are only two differences in components i can see. the 2010 has mechanical brakes and shimano rear der. Other than that they are about the same. I really like mine.

It sounds like a good deal but i would keep an eye out for other bikes also. A few guys on here have gotten lucky and found some good buys with better components for around that price or a little cheaper although they might be a little older.

 

Sounds like a good entry level bike.
If you can get it for $400, that much better.
I say go for it. Aluminum frame with Mech discs, good to get out and have fun with.
Give he wheels a spin, to see if they are true before buying. Also check if the rotors are flat, not warped.
17.5" is a medium frame, check the ride height to see it it fits you well and give it a ride before pulling the trigger.

I agree it sounds like a good entry level bike. Or a bike you can ride for years if you don't get the itch to always have something better. The price seems about right. A bike bought new for 800-1000 usually sells for about half that after it's a couple of years old.

 

Sounds good. I picked up a new Trek with disc brakes a couple years ago when I first got into biking. Forget exact model. Its served me well so far and I have no complaints.

My brother has this one. It's geometry seems a little different than my 3900, like I'm stretching out to reach the handlebars. I would suggest a test ride before you buy it, that's really the only way to know if you'll like it or not, no matter what components it has.

I do know the 17.5 inch will fit. I have sat on the 2011 Wahoo in stores here in Atlanta. The price does say negotiable so I might try work on that. I just don't see the point in going out to buy a new one for a couple hundred dollars more when I will be getting used to trails, etc. I have found a 3700 disc series here close to me as well for $350. From what I have read, the 3 series bikes have 26 inch tires compared to 29s on the Wahoo. A guy in the shop here suggested the 29 over the 26.

 

For the price, the bike is spec'd well. Ride the heck out of it, and find out what you really want in a bike. Then save your dollars and buy a bike that will do what you want.

 

Got on craigslist today to get the number for the Wahoo and both of the bikes I mentioned are gone! Guess I should have jumped a little quicker on first one. Anybody have one for sale around the South or suggestions of where to find some more besides checking craigsist?
