You do realize that is illegal? TX on 2 meters simplex or not with out a licence is illegal and your radio is not type approved for the business band. You can listen all you want on any band. Becoming a ham requires you to know the rules and hopefully following them if we don't we will loose even more frequencies. There are all ready more than enough wingnuts on the ham bands don't add to it get your licence and have fun.

How well matched is your antenna? Reflected power is just that, it is returning to the radio not leaving the antenna so now it's just transmitting that power back inside the cab grounding will not help a bad match.

this might be a silly question to ask but i didnt find an answer on google or the 34 pages of this thread... are race radios capable of running a pa system? one link on google showed a guy selling 2 kenwood radios that were so im assuming Yes it is capable?

ive read almost 34 pages of this thread and i think having a longer range for communication when in the desert is awesome. just need to do a bit more research and try to get a license.

Most likely they do not have PA capabilities probably just have audio out for external speakers. The LMR radios are designed to be used in public service bands and are licensed it’s not a CB type radio. Get your ham license and buy a ham radio they are about the same price and legal. A modern LMR radio is narrow band FM and will sound like #$@& on the ham bands so you will be much better off with a ticket and a ham radio.

Congrats! :) I ran a UV-B5 in a similar way on a road trip. The radio did not do well in the city due to poor intermod rejection. Still works though.

I just checked again, and sure enough, it got posted
    KG5CGG!
I am a bit surprised.. I thought general calls were 5char, not 6. Not that it matters...

As for the radio... I want a better mobile unit, but can't afford much right now. As it is, there are lots of repeaters on the mountain with good Los, so I am hopeful right now..

Congradulations on your General License! I am Technicial class and need the motivation to upgrade to General. I only have a Kenwood V71 2M/70cM radio at this time with a base antenna an 12V power supply on the home. Want to go mobile with it and buy a HF tranceiver then get that General ticket....

And I do have a simple CB for the Tacoma, reason being is the guys around here are just CB, not hams unfortunately. I only use it on trails, cannot stand the chatter and BS on the CB channels.

You run with the wrong crowd if they are only CB in AZ. Every run I have been on, there are at least two or three hams, we spread out and cover the whole group. Check out 4x4ham.com, mainly AZ, do several runs a year. Also, the repeaters are usually busy during the drive in and drive home.

There are some great guys working to convert all the CB guys to ham in AZ.

I got my General at the Devry ham fest. I want to save up and get an HF rig for my truck, but money is going else where. Got the Extra book, just haven't had time to open it.

The Yeasu FT-8800 is a great mobile radio and very inexpensive. If you can afford it, I recommend the Kenwood 710G, has built in GPS and super easy to setup APRS.

Oof.. And I thought I was doing good in life. I eagerly wait the day I can look at a $500 radio and consider it very inexpensive.

At this point, I am scouring eBay in hopes of finding an OK, somewhat modern 2m for less than a c bill..

Maybe I mis-spoke when I said very inexpensive. Compared to the other radios in the same class, it is the best priced. Usually can be found from gigaparts or hro with instant rebate for under $400 shipped. Also, I see them go used for about $300. See most in it's class are closer to $500, it is the cheaper option.

I just priced out my dream HF system.... ~$3k.... ouch. going to be a while for that one.

Study for my tech for the past week and taken the online practice exams. I'm looking at a Kenwood 710g for my truck when I pass the test. Would be open to suggestions, looked at the alinco 635, a few of the Icoms and Yaesu models well.

The TM-710G is a chunk of change for just talking on 2m and 440, if you are going to spend that much add a little to it and go ahead and get you a rig with 2m 440 6m/HF, this is, if you plan on upgrading in the future for General.

Yaesu, Icom and Kenwood all make great products.

Best of luck on the exam.

Yes that is the actual plan, upgrading the ticket to general. Thank you, I figure a little more studying and a few more practice exams and I should be on my way. I'm actually real close to a Ham Radio Outlet store, in Newark Delaware. I have been meaning to take a trip down there and see what they have on display.

Good idea, even if you are not ready to make a purchase when you go to HRO, it will give you an idea of what you like and how much will be looking at spending.

Once you get your General, you will be hooked. I listen on my HT to some locals when Im sitting in the recliner relaxing on the weekends but I don`t talk much on 2m anymore. The best thing about Ham radio is there is something there for all interests.

Once again, good luck, keep studying and before ya know it you`ll be on the air.

    Gotta run.
