I just meant antenna brand, lol
I downloaded chips to program it and actually found its pretty simple to program, but I'm pretty savy with electronics.

Thanks for that link! The question would be how "active" are the ones I find around my town...

Anyone in here run an HT on a motorcycle? I see the Bluetooth adapters for the HT as well as the headsets designed to fit in the helmet.

When I had my BMW I had an Autocom. Just make sure you have a PTT kit installed. Works great.

Here is the list of Net topics for the rest of 2014 and the first quarter of 2015. Hope to see you there.

    12/25 - Christmas - no net
    2015
    01/01 - New Year - no net
01/08 - Driving in the Snow
    01/15 - Destination - Dark Canyon Utah
01/22 - Vehicle Mounted Air Compressors
    01/29 - Cold Weather Camping
02/05 - Vehicle Recovery on the Trail
    02/12 - Ham Radio Installation
    02/19 - Destination - Boundry Peak
    02/26 - 2 Meter Radio Review
    03/05 - Vehicle Storage Solutions
    03/12 - Outdoor Medicine
    03/19 - Outdoor Legislative Issues
03/26 - Stories from Desert Magazine

Each week we have a different expert who leads the discussion, including medical doctors, lawyers, engineers, 4WD drive mechanics, and off road driving instructors. We are always on the lookout for new Net Control Operators and new topic ideas.

If you are interested, we can suggest several ways to listen or participate.

    1. We have direct 2 Meter and 440 repeaters in the following areas:

    A. Keller Peak KE6TZG Repeater at 146.385, +, 146.2. Coverage:Greater Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino, Orange and San Diego Counties.
    B. Palomar Repeater on Palomar Mountain in San Diego at 449.300, -, 100.0 Coverage: Most of San Diego County
    C. Portland W7RAT Repeater, Portland Oregon, at 440.4000, Standard offset, 123.0. Coverage: Greater Portland Area.

    3. Through IRLP (internet Radio Linking Project) we can link any IRLP node to the Western Reflector at node 9251. This includes any repeater that is IRLP equipped. If your favorite repeater is so equipped, and they will allow us to run our nets once a week, you will be able to participate through that repeater.

    4. With the aid of your computer (no radio needed), you can participate in the nets through Echolink by connecting to *World*, (you must use the asterisks) which is a connection to the Western Reflector at node 9251.

For a list of upcoming net topics, click here. Each week we post a Net Preview post, usually with various links, pictures and information on the net topic.

Smart phone works too. I use Echolink on my Nexus 5 phone. Works pretty well, and beats being tethered to a computer for the duration of the net. :D

I agree, I use it on my iPhone.

For anyone wanting to use Echolink, you will usually have to provide a copy of your license to the app owners, so they can verify you are legal to use the app. So don't wait until the last second to get it setup.

How's that antenna working out for you? I park in a garage in downtown Houston all week and can't have something on the roof so something like this would be good for me (just a little worried about performance since it's glass mounted). What are your thoughts on it so far?

    Thanks!

They do work but they are a compromise. They have an adjustable matching network inside the base that makes the radio happy and a very tiny radials. They are capacitive coupled and that means your coax probably will probably do most of the radiating. Another factor is window tint you might look at the antenna’s owner manual and see what they have to say about that. The ones I have mounted for others I cut the tint around the base. I hear people say “I can hit the repeater 30 miles away” This says a lot for the repeater and its location and not much about the antenna. I routinely talk to hikers on Mt Washington HT to HT with ½ a watt it is 30+ miles away but it’s also is 6288’ and direct line of sight. There is a UHF repeater up there that I could probably hit with a dead battery.

Just ordered a Kenwood TM-V71A to replace my Icom 207h in my 2014 Tacoma. Only replacing the Icom so I can have cross-band repeat in the truck.

Question: Are the power cables interchangeable? Can I leave the power cable running through the firewall in place and just hook up the Kenwood to that?

Both should use "OEM" T connectors. You should be just fine. You'll have to change the head unit cable though.

Thanks. I thought it would be OK. I knew the connectors should be the same, wasn't sure if I'd need to change the fuses though.

As far as the head unit cable goes, I just got a call from HRO....They are out of the remote mount kits in ALL of their stores. :( I might have to look elsewhere for it...Maybe give Gigaparts a call.
