I went with the Specialized Rock Hopper Comp Disc. Its a pretty smooth riding bike. I tried the 29er out but it just felt to awkward for me. $750 out the door.

Depends on your budget. First thing I changed were tires. Might consider Kenda Small Block 8's. I noticed a huge difference when I switched to them.

Then I'd switch the rear deraileur, then the front, then brakes, then shifters.

If you have some Franklins laying around, the front shock is a good thing to change; go with a Fox. Fox is lighter and more reliable than the RockShox that comes with the Hardrock.

I've also changed mine over to a single chainring up front. Went with a Race Face all-mountain 32 tooth with a bash guard. I really like it.

That ought to get you started.

Been riding bikes my whole life. With that said, personally I like to let the shit break or almost break before replacing it.

Some things that I have to modify if I don't care for the stock components are usually seat, grips, pedals, tires, and tubes. Get yourself a good computer for it. I bought a Cateye Micro Wireless for $50, and it works good.

I have to agree with ^^. Why replace it if its not broke yet. They might not be the best components but its a reputable bike company(specialized). I could understand if it was a walmart bike. A well known bike company won't ruin there name with junk components.

Why do people mod their trucks? Sure the factory stuff works just fine, but sometimes there are things that you can add that make it better.

For me, tires made it so I gripped better with less rolling resistance. It was noticable. The Fox shocks have better travel and are lighter (haven't changed my stock shock yet due to price). The power train stuff shifts better and is a bit more durable, so less chance of it breaking while on the trail if you ride hard.

For the most bang for the buck - look for a used bike.
A lot of people buy a bike, ride it twice and put it in the garage for 3 years.
Then they sell if for half of what it cost new.

When SilverB said, "its cheaper to buy good components when you buy the bike vs. trying to upgrade them later." I think he's talking about getting the best (for your budget) bike and components that you can, rather than plan on upgrade it later. When I worked in a bike shop, I can't tell you how many times I saw someone put a $700 suspension fork and $400 wheels on a $300 bike - even when I tried to talk them out of it. They would have been better off spending that money in the first place and getting better stuff.

I think you should find something 2 or 3 years old in your budget, and ride the piss out of it until you start breaking stuff. Then you'll know better what you want for your next bike. There is a lot of difference between a cross country mtb, an all mountain mtb, a hard tail / full suspension etc. Once you get some time in, you'll know what kind of riding you want to do - then you can go out and fry a credit card heh heh.
