 Go get 'em! Maybe you'll get it right before midnight on new year's eve like in The Big Year :p
I'll be jealous if you see it!

Nice! Birds on different continents are always so surprising and exciting! Hopefully you can get at least a few shots of some neat stuff!

Here's a Killdeer I was following at the cemetery during the CBC on saturday. There was a surprise flock of like 20 of them out there!

Teaser shot with more to come!!

Croatia?!?! WTH are you doing there?

Wouldn't be until next year if I get to go look for them...could be the first check mark on the 2015 list though!

I see killdeers a lot in Yellowstone - they're always in the warm water along Mammoth Terraces. Can't be a good environment for them though - lots of bad things in that water like arsenic

Speaking of lists....how about a recap on our year?

My 2014 count stands at 77. Not too bad since I didn't really start keeping track until April :notsure:

Best day/trip would either be when I first spotted the short eared owls - also saw about a dozen other species like hawks, geese, ducks, cranes, turkey vultures that day - or my trip to WY when I came across the horned lark, lazuli bunting, ruby crowned kinglet, and yellow breasted chat - all species I can't recall ever seeing before.

Best single sighting would either be the owls (again) especially because I was able to find them on several occasions or the bohemian waxwings I spotted in Yellowstone last spring - total fluke seeing them as they were only passing through on their migration.

Not so much here, some years are better than others but normally pretty rare. I think Lake Superior may have something to do with it but that is just a guess. Being the worlds largest freshwater lake it does change how a lot of birds migrate. ND is usually good, and Mi. is great from all accounts. A Springer breeder and trainer on Upland Journal said a few weeks ago that she is seeing them in the light poles at the football stadium at the local High School in Mi. We should all be so lucky!

LOL :D Have a good time doing so!

    Thanks!

Haha, yeaaahhhh and I didn't get any editing done today, either. Ended up going out with my mom again for a half-hour search for a varied thrush. Saw him and got some AWESOME shots of a Townsend's Warbler, some Allen's or Rufous Hummingbirds, and a Ruby-crowned Kinglet! Another 100 shots to edit, though...

Sounds like an excellent idea! I'll write my own up after the new year. Still might get some birding in! :D

Alright, slowly catching up on photos!
    Remember these guys??

I'm pretty sure that this is one of the babies now, or the mom who is now all pretty since she's not taking care of kids. :p It was really beautiful and I'm bummed that I didn't get better pictures, but whenever I went down to get shots it wasn't there.

And then, much to my surprise, I was treated with a GIANT HUMMINGBIRD in that courtyard! I shot these from the apartment window :D

[IMG]Giant Hummingbird by 92shawman, on Flickr

For size comparison, an Anna's Hummingbird is a little bigger than one of those orange flowers, and the Rufous/Allen's Hummingbirds are about the size of those orange flowers.

I had a pretty good birding year, to cap it off these are my last species of 2014. I am fortunate to live where these guys winter.

I just saw a flock of what must have been a couple of thousand little black birds. They flew into some pecan trees. They almost sounded like parakeets. It was cool to see, they would fly down and feed on the ground then back up in the trees. I looked at them thru some crappy binocs, but didn't have a good camera on me. From what I could tell they had iridescent blue green color to them, you could barely see it, at least from my POV. Cool to watch how in unison with their movements as a group, especially being that large of one.

Also have two Red headed woodpeckers, in the pecan trees. They're interesting to watch too.

Random Tampa Bay, Florida pictures while kayaking with my iPhone or $200 point and shoot Nikon. I'm certainly no pro but some of the pictures turned out pretty good.

FL has some really great birds and places to capture them too.

I'm not sure what your birds are Josh. Just that the first looks like a European Robin :D
