This same bunch (I think its the same ones anyways) spends a lot of time in two fields near the interstate....one field on each side. Quite terrifying if you're driving through when they decide to switch fields! :goingcrazy: The smart ones make the journey in two hops and stop in the median, the dumb ones try to make it in one hop....usually doesn't end too well.

Anyone get any of these? I forgot about them and haven't had the time to look them up lately.

    How's everyone's 2015 shaping up birding-wise?

    Nice! Good sleuthing. :D
Someday I'll probably get over to Europe. They certainly have some different-colored birds!

Wow...some of the shots are incredible! I need to hone up on my skills. I have some larger lenses (Nikon 300mm ED) that weigh like 3-4 lbs, but I've never been able to get that close. And, I'll rummage through some pics and post it....sorry for not posting my first in this thread with a pic. Found some!

    took these in Alaska

Took this one outside in the front yard....not a bird!

We've had a number of birds die or be found with some mysterious substance on their feathers recently. It's not petroleum based and has experts baffled. Necropsy should help. Then today, I read this from Nat Geo.

Curious to know what's killing the birds in both cases.

I read about the birds and the goo earlier this week, didn't know about the auklets though :( too sad.
Wasnt there a case a few years ago that seals, otters and birds were dying off in CA and it turned out that there was some type of toxic algae that flourished that year, something that they normally avoid but it had become so prevalent that they couldn't avoid eating it?

I was wondering if the mysery goo could be something from the Fukushima earthquake. A combination of whatever got washed out to see in the tsumani and had been churning in the ocean and turning more poisonous ever since, slowly making its way to our coast. That the conspiracy theory part of my brain spewing that one out... But you never know...

I'm not sure what the goo is. The way they described it, it sounds like some kind of adhesive. It eventually comes off the bird but not easily and probably traumatic for the bird-I doubt it's Fukishima related.

The Auklets, on the other hand, that seems more difficult. Could be the warmer water is causing a poisonous plankton bloom. A lot of the comments in the story suggest radiation from Fukishima. But the range of dead birds is so great it makes you wonder if it's not something like over population or a problem with their food supply-like a shortage.

We've had a couple of big fish die offs recently. But those are sort of "normal" (smelt) although not in the numbers found on beaches.

Got out for a little drive today and about the only thing I saw was 5 golden eagles. They were apparently the only ones able to fly in the high winds today! Saw a couple of balds too and a whole flock of Canada geese camped out in a field. No ducks, geese or pelicans in the river which is weird. I finally gave up looking.

I also think I maybe saw a rough legged hawk but you know how my hawk ID'ing skill are  I didn't get any pics as I was on a 2 lane highway with no shoulder and he was just perched on a fence post watching traffic. Was almost all white on the head, mottled on the chest and back and mostly dark with a few white specks on the legs, tail

Goodness, that's pretty sad! End of days, man, end of days.

Psshhhh, sounds pretty good for high winds! I've only ever seen about two golden eagles, so right there you saw more in one day than I've seen ever! Besides, raptors are always fun. :D

Hmm, I'd guess either rough-legged or ferruginous, but take a look at guide images. Perched raptors are tough, though.

 I am not going to hold $3k worth of camera gear out the window while driving 70mph!

I am in the middle of a great raptor habitat, lots of them year round and even more winter here. A few of the rivers here never freeze over completely so they can fish year round. Plus there's lots of farm land and rodents, roadkill. Pretty much a buffet for them all year.
Come visit, I'll show you eagles and you can teach me how to ID hawks better

How about owls? Great Greys in particular? I remember a few pages back you mentioned snowys but they were a ways away.

Oh yeah, I see owls too. The area I was in yesterday is where I saw the short eared family last summer.

And I like the great greys too - just not when they swoop right in front of my vehicle! :goingcrazy:
