I have a pair of either Cassin's or House finches collecting nesting supplies from the shrubs outside my office window today. Tried to take a pic but my phone focuses on the window screen :frusty:

That is true and my first thought also. The spread of avian cholera to other species is of concern though. Need more light goose hunters! Although they aren't making a dent in the situation.

Yeah the cholera is a huge concern. I was helping with duck banding at Bosque Del Apache here in NM and went out to collect dead fowl (mostly snows) and when they die in the water, their head falls underwater and all the cholera just drains out of the mouth and nose. Nasty stuff

Saw my first robin this morning, official sign of Spring. Also means the Eagles should be moving North up the Mississippi River they are the first to migrate. Waterfowl will soon follow, they don't waste time going North. Going South they move at a more leisure pace and eat more.

There were at least a hundred Baldies on ~20 mile stretch of the River today.

These guys were fighting over a small fish
    [IMG]

Most of the birds were well out in the River along open stretches of the River. But well out there. So I went downstream to where I knew the local residents fish. Bumped this one trying to get too close.

So went further down River to another local Baldie favorite fishing spot and found one that was busy eating and he let me get a lot closer.

Went on a little scouting mission yesterday to see what's all migrated back into the area. Didn't see too much but I did find a few Meadowlarks staking out some birdhouses and I saw the first pair of Sandhill cranes. I also saw a lone Ross's goose or snow goose hanging out with some Canada geese. Hope it wasn't one from that flock in Idaho! I was thinking about maybe reporting my sighting just in case

Hey Ian we get tons of sandhills down on the tx coast too and a lot of whooping cranes. Seems a few of thesandhills started to migrate, but the whoopers are still here.

Saw lots of birdies today - no a lot of opportunity to pull off the highway for pics but I saw a couple golden eagles, some balds, more cranes, about a dozen swans circling over a field of cows (maybe they were going to attack? :notsure: ), lots of various hawks and things gliding over fields, and a couple of bluebirds. First blue sighting of the year!

Could've been mating. They come together in mid air and kinda spiral down and split before hitting the ground. Super fast!

Just caught a story about the spooge & birds again. They were talking about the cost to clean the birds (over $100K). Still no idea what the stuff was or where it came from. I'm sure they know what it's composed of but no idea where it came from.

I just got home and was walking to my front door when I heard a roaring sound like a really distant jet and looked up to see it was a Bald Eagle with it's wings tucked right in dropping in a really fast / steep dive over my house and out of sight beyond the trees
