Took this one during the BP oil spill in the Gulf. This near Pensacola, FL. The bird is perched on oil spill containment boom.

Cassin's finch or house finch? i have house finches at my house but they look different - different coloring and size (this guy was bigger, beak was thicker/bigger)

Also had some dark eyed juncos, mountain bluebirds, chipping sparrows, sandhill cranes, eagles, mallards, and a bunch of others that i couldn't get pics of or identify flitting around. and there was a northern flicker nesting in a tree but i couldn't get a pic of them, too skittish. the hole in the tree was only about 3' off the ground and if you could get close enough you could here them scratching around in there - maybe the babies?

The baby robins sprouted some feathers this weekend! They're starting to look like real birds....watching one preen right now. He still has some downy feathers over his eyes so it looks like he has big, bushy, grey eyebrows...

A lot of great bird pictures lately!

Slow for birds here now and I have not had a lot of time. But did capture a Male Scarlet Tanager recently off the back deck.

Pretty! We have a few species that are bright, vibrant colors but most of the birds here are browns and greys to blend into their surroundings. Always a treat to see the more colorful guys!

I think the kids are learning to fly already! Mom was chasing me through the parking lot this morning and now I notice the nest is empty! I bet she was trying to shoo me away from where ever the kids had crash landed....
UPDATE: two are back in the nest, another is stuck in the bushes and is squawking....I don't think he knows how to get back to the nest. Mom and the 4th baby are unaccounted for

he doesn't seem to know how to maneuver his way back to the nest. mom just stopped by with a worm for him but he kept hopping away from her so she left. now he seems very displeased that he is getting rained on....

It's crazy how fast they fledge. I have a few nests of them every year.

I know! It was less than a month ago that the nest was built and the first little guy hatched 2 weeks ago today! They grow up so fast.... *tear*
One of them learned (the hard way) what a window is. Little guy just jumped off the branch right into the window. He's fine but he was a little dazed at first.

Random find....the burrowing owl apparently decided that the lens hood would make a cozy little home....

yes. she was tough to find but i knew that she wouldn't stray too far from the nest. they'll be flying on their own soon but they're still a little awkward and they don't have all of their feathers yet.

That's awesome! I can't believe how far behind the times we are up North here! The birds are just starting to lay eggs and I see a bunch of geese that haven't even built nests yet!

Most of the babies start making an appearance around mothers' day here - moose, elk, buffalo, birds.
of course, so many of the AK birds have to migrate from down here - that's a heck of a road trip before setting up house!
