Think I mentioned it on here before but over on Upland Journal is a PhD that has studied Sage Grouse for several years all across the West. Many upland hunters have a lot of love and concern for the Sage Grouse. The oil industry AND wind turbine energy companies have had an impact on the population, it is obvious. Unknown as to the exact cause but certainly a cause and effect.

They cited an increase in males in the population estimates as a reason not to list. I don't know how much I can divest about the work that the labs I was in are doing, but it'll be interesting to see what effect their results have on the decision to list or not, or at least on the decision to increase regulations on the energy industry.

Yes it will be interesting. I went back and looked at UJ for some of the posts in the past, although sounds like you already are aware of most of the information. If you have some time and are interested you might find some of the information interesting. The person I was thinking of is Rhode Island (Eric). He spent a number of years in the field in the West studying Sage Grouse but a couple of years ago took a sit down gig as a professor in Maine. He still does research of course but now it is on Ruff Grouse. http://www.uplandjournal.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard312a/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=2;t=91450;st=0

    http://www.uplandjournal.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard312a/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=31;t=93255;hl=rhode+isl

Turns out there are at least 2 other research Bios that have studied Sage Grouse and have posted on there

Yes. There were several mallards and a few mergansers around. The mallards aren't as skittish around people and would get much closer to me so I was having fun taking pics of them underwater. A couple times one would surface and end up hitting another...
There is a natural spring - literally a river bubbles from the side of a hill - and the water is so clear! Gravel bottom and no sediment - fishes, ducks...whatever is under the water is in clear view.

Went to the river today to see what is moving through.

Not the best picture and not sure how to pull it off from a distance like this. Bald Eagles were chasing ducks, they eat quite a few of them. An Eagle is after a flock here, Pelicans in the front and Tundra Swans in the back.

Tundra Swans need to run for 15-20 feet to get airborne.

Went out to the lagoon last week looking for a Scissor-tailed Flycatcher. Didn't find it the first time, but got a pretty good list!

Really beautiful Audubon's Warbler right in the visitor's center parking lot

Got some winter migrant waterfowl in town!

The second time I went out we saw the flycatcher but of course it was digesting a big bug it had just caught, so it was hiding. Then when it came out it flew way far away, so no good photos...yet! I'll try again if it's still around this coming week.

With family scattered about, this Thanksgiving's pretty calm, so I went through a few photos.
Ended up getting some decent shots of the Scissor-tailed Flycatcher last weekend! A few other good birds in the mix, too. The new one for me was the Black-and-white Warbler while we were looking for a Northern Waterthrush that we never ended up finding.
