Its been awhile..

Hey everyone, I know its been awhile since i've been on. I went to field training for the Air Force over the summer and have been swamped this fall semester. Right now I'm trying to play catch up on anything new. I'm trying to figure out what my next upgrade will be on my baby. Thinking about either getting a Westin Polished bullguard with Hella Lamps, or a CompuStar Alarm systems. (Thievery is bad here in Lubbock) Any thoughts?

im gonna suggest,if you are wanting a bull bar, go with an aries instead of westin. the aries has welds that are grinded down and smooth, unlike the westin which has plastic caps to cover up bad welds. i have one on my truck(no pics yet tho) and it looks awesome. i also have a set of hella 500's.......to me, the setup looks awesome. also, the aries are alot cheaper than the westins. heres a link to where i got mine from...........

hope this helps man. oh,by the way.....welcome back!!!

How do you like the Hella 500s? I'm kind of tied between either the PIAA 520s or those. I know PIAA are more expensive. How do your hella fit in the bull bar. I've heard that they are a tight fit.

actually, the hella's fit right in. the piaa fit very tightly, and you may also need to grind down the base a bit so you can aim them. on mine, with the hellas, there is roughly 1/4 to 3/8 of an inch left, and thats perfect for aiming them.

The hellas are awesome thier bright, the only thing thats a tight fit is putting the cover back on the lights but its not tight where you have to struggle putting them on, dont get me wrong i wanted piaas but i got my hellas for $50 bucks so i made out.

Seems like people like the hellas. Anyone here anything about the KC 50 series 5" Long Range Lights? I havent heard anything about em, but they seem like they are really bright running H3 Bulbs at 100w. The complete kit runs about 180.00. I'm just trying to keep my options open. I just want something that will make night into day when I turn them on. Deer are a huge problem where I live.

can i suggest going with the hellas and buying and installing h3 100w bulbs in place of the h3 55w ?? it would save you alot of money. you can get the hella's @ pepboys for round $65,70, and bulbs for around $4 or 5.

im gonna go ahead and say it can handle the wattage. but if you want to you can always throw out the harness that comes with the lights, and make you own(as i did) with 12ga wire, instead of 16ga. the 12ga is a little thicker wire, and can definitely handle more.

How does the skid plate thing mount on to the aires bar? Is it like the westin with the top using three screws to hold into the bottom of the crossbar, and the bottom bolted to two tabs that are welded to the bar?

The reason for the question, and not to insult anyone, but I think the stainless skid plate on a black bar looks like crap, and I just want a simple black bar, with no other crap on it besides my KC lights, but I refuse to spend 270 bucks only to have to cut of some little tabs and then pay to have the bar powdercoated again.

GRRRRRR why does nobody sell a bar without a non-functional skid plate on it.

you are correct sir, it mounts as the westins do(skidplate). you could probably have just the skidplate powdercoated pretty reasonably though right??

That is an option I suppose, and I checked that guy's pics, and the black skid plate does look better than the stainless one, but it's still not perfect.

Here's a pic of the bar I had on my 04 taco. This is a Westin Safari Bar, and it has no skid plate. This is the look I like, I think it just looks so much cleaner. Unfortunately, Westin, in their infanite wisdom, does not offer a mounting kit for this bar for the gen 2 Tacomas, so I am stuck with buying a Safari bar and then having to spend time and more money to "fab up" mounting brackets for it, or spent money on someone's bull bar, and then spend more money and time to modify it to look like I want it to. I am of the opinion that if I spend money on something I should not have to alter it to function the way I want it to. Sorry guys, not really looking for answers I guess, (unless someone has some answers), just venting. Thanks for listening.
