What is the deffinition of a "mid travel" suspension?

I see the term mid travel tossed around a lot. What is the definition of mid travel? Where does it start and where does it end? Is any suspension with better suspension travel than stock but not long travel mid travel? Does it HAVE to be a coil over? What about for the rear? Please discuss and enlighten us.
