Gear Installation $1000!?!?

I just got a price from a local shop and they said it would cost $1000 just to install new gears, are they ripping me off?

 

i got a price for front and rear gears and that was $1300.0,so half of that, ballpark,that was installed prices

 

Yeah, that's about what I was thinking for price range, but he said it would cost $700 for the 6 inch lift install, which seemed a little high also, am i wrong?

 

they are giving you standard labor rates... one shop i went to that didnt know me was asking 1,100 for parts and labor on rear diff regear...

another shop that i did know, was charging me 600 parts and labor...

 

Is that labor only?

Or does that include the cost of the gears? Rebuild kit (seals, etc)?

I would assume that's for both front & rear differentials?
If the cost of gears & rebuild kit is included - that might not be too bad.

Find out exactly what you're getting with that quote.

Before you get the gears done - have you thought about putting any lockers in? The best time to do it is while you change the gears....

Back many years ago - I had 4.56 gears/rebuild kit and ARB lockers (ARB's were purchased separately) installed in my jeep (both axles) for $1200. I had this done at a reputable 4WD shop with a guy who has 20 years experience doing gears. I was glad to pay the excess cost to get it done properly.

I am running into the same problem. I bought front and rear 4.56 with installation kit from NITRO for $1100. Now the local shops want $1100 more to install.

 

^^ I agree with said above. Install the Rear third member your self, and get someone else to do the front. Installing gears is a tedious job, it takes some time. That is why the price is so high.

 

Once the diffs are set up, actually getting them in the truck isn't very hard in a decently equipped shop.

The setup of the gears inside the differentials is where the magic happens, and you want someone who knows what they're doing and does quality work for that. Pay what you have to pay to get that.

1 grand for diff setup and install isn't bad at all if it's both axles. If it's one axle, they better be kidding.
