CV Joint moving!!

Hey guys,

I went to take off my sway bar today and I found a bunch of splattered grease on and around my driver side CV joint where it meets the diff.

After wiping it all off, I checked the CV boot for tears or cracks and found none. Then I checked the shaft. I found I was able to move the shaft about an 1/8", side to side, from where it meets with the differential.

The pass. side does not move. So I am assuming the grease is coming from that gap where the CV shaft meets the diff.

This is on a 09 DCSB with a 6" Fabtech lift.

I had sort of the same issue with the carrier bearing, where the nut had backed off after the lift and it shredded the bearings. But they don't mess with the shafts when doing the lift right? They did re-gear, so was there disassembly with that?

What do the internals look like? Is there a nut in there that may have come loose?

I'll have to take it to the dealership on Wednesday unless I can find a fix here.

The movement is normal, however it looks like the oil seal popped out. You should pull the fill plug and see if the fluid level is low.

I'll check it. My only concern is that grease was splattered, not oil.

I have to drive back home today, 120 miles. I should hold until I get back and I can look at it there or take it to the dealership. I don't have time today to fix it unfortunately.

Is this something an installer would have to mess with to either install the lift or install new gears?
If not, I should be able to claim this under warranty.

An installer would have to remove the axles for a gear change not the lift.

To sort of correct myself, they would only need to take the driver side axle out to get the third member out to swap gears.

Could be a loose boot clamp as well. Check that.

I put a lift on my 2000 tundra and the pressure of the cv angle made the cv grease come out the boot ends with out tearing the boots. The fix for that was putting hose clamps on the boot ends to keep them from leaking. This eventually ended up in the hose clamps tearing into the boots but it's better than loosing all your grease right away. I put after market axles on that tundra after all that and they wouldn't leak out grease with the lift. So use some hose clamps for now til you find a more permanent fix.

It was a thick brown. Not sure I saw any tint of green.
