I just installed 5100s on my front end this week and used this method. It was really easy and simple even for myself who had never done this before. It took me about an hour since I was careful not to screw anything up. I set mine at a 1.75" lift to level mt Taco out. Also I would recommend an alignment afterwards. My toe-in was out on both front tires.

do you HAVE TO disconnect the bottom A arm from the steering or does that just make it "easier" to take out the shock

^ makes it way easier. I used this method twice and works fine. Just remember to let the coil uncompress very slow & don't let the jack "jerk" it downward.

Ya I had to make them pretty loose so they would drop down far enough but you don't have to take them off. Just make sure you mark them like they say in the video before you loosen them

Dont forget to loosen the lower shock mount bolt. If you don't the LCA may not swing down far enough. This lead me to believe that the LCA joints were too rusted and took me forever to figure it out after practically disassembling the LCA...

I actually disconnected the LCA from the steering knuckle and that was a big mistake, The LCA wouldnt jack back up because of how stiff the new spring was so i ended up having to compress the spring with a crowbar enough to get the LCA up to reinstall the bolts, It was a bitch and i can say from expierence, RENT A SPRING COMPRESSOR if your installing new springs.

so i'm confused this is legit or should you not do it this way. I have a set of 5100 and eibach that i need to put on and this seems more convinient than driving into town and paying 400 bucks

It is a legit way unless your new springs are too long then you will need the spring compressors. Auto part stores will rent or loan the compressors no need to pay someone $400 to do it.

I made this video and I have used this method several times. BTW I have used this method with OME 885 springs and it works well.

I like how the first thing in the video says not to try this at home. I know a few people have done it. But I would never do it this way. I've seen what can happen when a spring unloads to fast. :(
