4x4 light will not come on.help

1998 toy 4x4 auto trans auto hubs.looked under truck saw cv joint on left side was leaking grease bad.tried the 4wd and would not go into 4wd no 4x4 lihgts on dash and will not lock in front dif.anyone know if bad cv joint can cause this problem?any help would be great Thanks

 

I would say a bad CV will not cause this all my cvs are torn and i have no problem with 4x4. I have never heard of a problem like this before.

 

check your fuses/4wd relay/box? had a friend who bought a 4x4 4runner. the guy he bought it from said the 4wd didnt work. got to looking around and found out the fuse was blown. worked like a charm ever since.

 

maybe the wire is unplugged from the switch behind the dash?

 

I cant remember how 4 wheel drive is driven on the 98 but I beleive there is an actuator on the front axle .The front axle Could be vacuum controlled or could be electrical ...dont remember
When you select 4 wheel drive on the transfer case , 12 volts is applied the the actuator on the front differential to move a shift fork to the 4 wheel drive position .
Once the shift fork on the front axle locks into the 4 wheel drive position , the light will illuminate .
Using a test light , Test for 12 volts at the front differential actuator when you shift the transfer case into 4x4 .
A torn cv boot will not cause you to lose 4x4

So was the front differential actuator the problem ?
Did you have 12 volts at the wiring harness at the front actuator harness or is this vaccuum controlled ?
