Clunk after Dakar Leaf install

Clunk after Dakar Leaf install

Ok guys i just installed a OME complete lift kit with the Dakar Leaf pack and LR upper control arms. i have two issue one of which i have already ordered the parts for that darn front diff needle bearing. And now the next issue is i have a clunk coming from the rear of the truck but only when i go from driving to reverse i have been reading and searching for hours. This is what i came up with to check and do 1. grease U-joints and slip yoke, 2. possibly install a 3 degree shim. Is axle wrap even a issue with the Darkar leaf pack? Truck is a 06 DCSB 4X4 6 speed manual with 81,000 miles on it. any help would be great. Thanks Zach

What did you torque your U bolts to ?

I'll bet it is the slip yoke. I believe greasing it requires disassembly. Had a vehicle once that had the same issue going forward to reverse.

i will try going to 90ftlbs. And i just thought it had to be coming from the rear do to forward and reverse transistion. if not where else could the noise be coming from? maybe the lower control arm is loose from the alignment?

Lots of places. Brake Slap is very common on these trucks and usually shows up during transition from drive to reverse or vice versa and braking.

Well i think it has something to do with the lift install because i have never had any issues prior. i still have stock 265/75/16 and rims on the truck.

I did not mean to sound rude at all sorry if thats how it sounded. i appreciate all the help and the suggestions. unfortunately i will not be able to look at anything till monday but the more ideas for things to check or that can go wrong is great.

2 ideas but just guessing.

Did you loosen the center bearing mounting bolts to allow the housing to re-center on the bolts? Maybe the driveshaft is quirking that bearing housing in an odd way. Mine moved back almost as far as the slots would allow after putting in the Dakars.

U-joints will be reaching slightly new angles after lifting. If they were low on grease, maybe hit a dry spot and wore out. Grease the **** out of them.

These 2 are cheap, quick, and easy to rule out at least.

I'd suggest just going all around and double check the torque on anything you loosened during the install. Could always be unrelated to the lift and the timing just coincidence though.

That i have not that is a good idea makes sense to me, and no i have not greased the u-joints, dont know when the last time was but probably never i bought the truck 5 months ago used with 80,000 on it for 16k started doing a tune up and the plugs had never been changed so went through all the fluids and everything. i knew i forgot to do something thanks for the idea. so here is my list so far.

1 retorque u-bolts to 90ftlbs.
2 grease the splip yoke and u-joints and recenter the carrier bearing.
3 check torque on the lower control arms

I have had this once or twice in the week I've had my lift on. I seem to notice it when try to drop the carrier bearing to (near zero). I'm thinking its the shaft torquing up and rising in the carrier bearing. I'm still working on my low speed driveline vibe, as my pinion shaft is about 1.25 degrees higher angle than the tc output. You need a gauge (and I need a better one) to measure the angles before you go throwing shims at the rearend. Here's a link to the process if you need it.

I think it will be one of these things. Just my guess and agreement with this post.

just got off from my 24hr watch came home greased u-joints and the slip yoke retorqued the leaf springs to 90 ftlbs with a different torque wrench went through and check everything else that was removed and retorqued just to be safe things were loose thats for sure. I think the torque wrench i used before was not calibrated and was way off so i said well i also used it to torque my lug nuts jacked up rear of truck and lets just say iam glad i checked them they were loose like one was wobbling. the lesson to take from this is please make sure the torque wrench you are using is properly calibrated. Now i am just waiting on my new bushing from ECGS and the truck will be done well at least for now. Thanks for all the input on things to check.
