First off I wanna throw this out there, My expertise on vehicles lies under the hood, before this past year I was a complete gear under the hood, suspension for me was done on cars and its imo wayy less complex than on a truck. That being said iv searched various threads looking for help but im not really sure what to look for, before some troll tells me to use the search function :). I have a 05 trd sport. I purchased it, already with a fabtech lift and 35's. My question is this, I just purchased some light racing uca's to address my alignment problem. When I started the install, I have these shocks that are clamped to my tie rod ends. I assume this is like a steering damper to accommodate the larger tires. Iv always noticed they had rust and just overall kinda looked like shit since iv owned the truck, but after i took them off they are busted to hell. Do I need these ? Iv looked at other peoples builds on second gens and have not noticed anything that looks like these, I also pulled both of the part numbers off of them and googled them and havent been able to find the shock. I just dont know if they are needed or really what purpose they serve? Is there an alternative I can buy? any input would be greatly appreciated.

    thanks

One side goes to a bracket that's bolted to the frame, and the other has a u-bolt system that goes around the tie rod end. Hope this helps clarify

I personally have never seen or heard of this on a tacoma before. Probably a custom fab job. Maybe some of the DB lift guys will chime in here

That is pretty custom! I think the person who put those on is still living the 80s/90s lifted truck life. Just throw shocks at everything. Ha!

I'm don't understand a lot on the suspension stuff but how did they do the suspension lift with 35's and using the stock bilstein shocks? Aren't those the same as mine which are the stock trd off road ones?

There are big spacers bolted to the top of the factory coilovers.

I know the basics, I have went over it pretty well, it's all pretty straight forward, those sketchy ass shocks are the only thing out of the ordinary. I had just never seen anything like that on a taco before. My local guy checked it out last week when I got an alignment and all he could find was I needed new ucas. They never got addressed when it was lifted so it can't be aligned properly

You may want to take pictures of the full setup and let these guys have a look. They may find more things that are out of place. Many members here know the different suspension setups inside out.

Josh, you do not need those one the truck. a properly aligned truck with no worn out parts will handle just fine with that lift and 35s, without the steering dampeners.

that is an add-on that fabtec used to offer with the 6'' kit. i only got to see it in person once on a florida member's truck. his kit was in slightly better shape than yours though, so hit may have had a chance at having some kind of affect. your dampers on the other hand probably need to go in the dumpster. those things look rough. don't sweat it though, if all else is good on the truck, you'll be just fine.

here's the only picture of them on his truck i have:

Would it cause any issues or is it possible to get rid of that spacer bolted to my coil overs and go with a bigger shock? Like fox or king or something with the resi?

king and icon make 6'' specific coilovers. fox may as well, but I've only ever installed the first two. all it is is a standard Tacoma coilover, with a much longer lower mount, below the coil. you can get them with or without resis.

Would i get any more travel out if this? I just figured my stock shock vs a actual 6" lift shock would perform a little better?

You would gain travel as you would have a longer shock and spring along with it riding a hell of a lot better
