Couple newbie questions

Ok, so all these abbreviations are driving me crazy. UCA stands for upper control arm I think.... Am I right? I read that if you have a 3" lift you need new UCA's.... What about a 3" leveling kit? What exactly are the 5100's everyone is talking about? Im assuming they are some type of shock? Are leveling kits really that bad if you offroad? I dont hard core off road, but I do like to get it muddy from time to time.

There are 2 types of spacer/leveling kits
1 is a spacer on top of the shock "top plate". This is bad, as it can cause breakage off road. It will also wear out your ball joints pretty quick
2. a "Pre load spacer", goes inside teh shock/spring assembly and adds Preload to the spring to give lift. The ride can be a bit more stiff

The 5100's people are talking about are an adjustable shock eith 4 pre set height settings. stock, .85", 1.74", and 2.5". It is adjusted via a circlip under the spring seat. Though it does preload teh spring to achieve lift, the ride characteristic is better as the shock is valved for the new spring rate (from adding preload to the spring)

Other options are a "Coilover kit" for the 5100's that adds a threadded adjuster, and a different spring.
Then you have OME (Old Man Emu) replacement springs and shocks. Their springs are availible in different rates rangeing from 590lbs to 650 lbs. (stock is 540#)

And then you have "Coilovers" which is kind of a misnomer as all the front shock/springs on the front of Tacomas are a Coilover, as the "Coil" goes "over" the shock......Anyway......Most Coilovers are adjustable, rebuildable, and come with a 650# spring rate.
Leepers and the "Toytec" coilovers come with a 600# rateed spring.
Coilovers are also rebuildable

So the spacer looks like it is in between the bracket and on top of the coil. Sorry but i've never been very mechanically inclined.

Ya, that looks like what I have on my truck. It has the coil over that and then the top of that bolts to the bracket. This is the "bad" set-up right? Sorry for so many questions, I just dont want to mess up my truck.

Welll...yeah. It lengthens the strut assembly and that can cause over extension of the front components.....ball joints, and even the shock it self.

I just went to the revtek site and looked at the kit and it says it comes with pre-load spacers. I'm still guessing this is the not good one. If you were to go with http://toyteclifts.com/index.php?pag...mart&Itemid=53

Being as your truck is a double cab, get the 885 springs. You will need new shocks, either the Bilstien 5100's or OME n140s.

To get the alignment to spec, and have a bit better ride, yes.

Also, if you go with the OME shocks, get a trim packer for the driver side. Its a 5mm spacer that adds a little preload to the driver side to account for the extra weight of the tank, driver and battery.
