i want to apologize if this has been explained anywhere else. ive been looking around trying to find info on doing a 4' lift and been finding a lot of info on spindles for prerunners, and some info on drop bracket lifts. the first obviously isnt an option for me, and as ill explain the latter isnt really the direction im looking to go.

i have a 2012 TRD 4wd DCSB right now im on stock wheels and tires with 5100 all around leveling her out. no other major mods to speak of. building on the 5100s i have rough country AAL in my closet ready to go on. looking at toytec springs, icon UCA, and a dif. drop. which should comfortably get me to a three inch lift. im looking to sit sligthly bulldog . or atleast a good solid level.

now, for my question. im looking to wrap countersteer type x wheels with cooper discover STT M/T in 295/70r17. ive been assured that this is possible with some minor trimming. however, i used to run my last two tacomas through their paces in the mud holes down here. i dont do any rock crawling, no real need for long travel or anything like that. but im thinking if i can get closer to 4" out of a lift ill have less rubbing issues and hopefully enough travel to not have to worry hitting holes with 34s. does anyone know if lifting like this is possible/practical. what i would need to do in order to get that kind of lift out of the set up im going for? and if its not practical, and im better off just trimming on a 3" will i be running into any issue in offroad situations with those shoes?

I am not sure but I think anything over 3 inches requires a drop bracket lift.

Unfortunately if you are 4wd anything over 3" will bind the cv's and your ball joints will hate you. Option is Long travel for..probably out of the picture or a drop bracket lift. Check out BDS for that

im trying to avoid a 6 inch lift. or a drop bracket for that matter. i dont know much about long travel, well really nothing about long travel. i dont know even if i was willing to go that route, i would assume it would be more expensive, would it even be practical for someone who just does some weekend mudding after a good rain and occasional trail riding?

Then a good 3" lift will fit your needs if you want to stay away from a drop bracket lift. Look into bilstein 5100's w/ some toytec 3" lift coils and the 5100's set a 0 and some upper control arms such as light racing or camburg w/ the ball joint style. Back you could go add a leaf 1.5-2" and bilsteins back there. That would be a all around cheap and practical lift and little to no maintenance. Best of luck

does turning tires to black wall out count? How bout added snug top rebel.
You could add a 1" body lift to the 3" suspension lift and get 4"?

thank you rad!!! honestly thats basically the exact set up im going with. already have the 5100s alone set to level her out. i have the AAL in my closet locked and loaded to put in once i do the lift. looking to put on the toytec springs, with icon UCA's and a diff drop.

i actually just ran across a build thread for a guy not too far from me running 285/75 16 on similar backspacing to the wheels im going to run with 295/75 17. seeing that along with the rep for the wheels im looking to run telling me i should be fine with some light cutting may be just the vote of confidence i needed. just dont wanna be tearing off my fender first time i hit a good mud hole.

sorry if my very limited mechanical knowledge is failing me here, the diff drop wont help with the CV's and the angles? in my mind im thinking its essentially accomplishing the same thing as a drop bracket... probably way off on this though.

yes it does help a little. but the problem is the diff drops only drops the front of the diff, so it rotates a little. they say on 2nd gens they really dont do anything.

the only way to go over 3 inches would be to get a body lift (yuck, ugly, no.)
or to get a drop bracket.

personally id get a 3 inch lift and start cutting away.

ok thanks. so is the diff. drop even necessary for a 3 inch lift on a 2nd gen.?

and yeh, im definitely not putting any body lift on my truck. just not my thing. i know some trucks like dodge's take body lifts decently, or atleast better than others.. but im not messing with that on my taco.

most people say no they are not necessary.
but im sure it does help a little bit! sure it couldnt hurt.

yeah i agree, no body lift.

you will need to use a big fucking hammer, a razor blade to cut the plastic, and possibly a grinder. lol
