I just ordered some front Bilstein 5100s to level my 2008 tacoma and I was wondering how much I should be looking at to have them installed? I don't want to end up paying way more than I should be.

hells ya! if you have/can borrow a floor jack, torque wrench and some simple hand tools changing out shocks is a breeze.

It really isn't bad to do it yourself. Just nuts and bolts. Take half a day on the weekend and go for it. If you do it yourself spray all the nuts you will be taking off with something like PB Blaster, maybe do that even if you take it to a shop. Might not hurt to take a wire brush to the threads before you start backing thing off, especially if you are reusing anything.

If your getting new tires too, I suggest you have the alignment, install, and tires all done at once... I was charged 1 hour of labor with the alignment.

to do it properly yes, however there are people who use the weight of the truck to compress the spring. I would not try that but I am not as mechanically inclined as some.... okay, as most.

Or you can just take it off then bring it to a local shop and see if they will swap out the coils for you for $10-20. Its really quick with a wall mount spring compressor. If not rent a free one from local auto shop. just make sure you know what you are doing.

Local shops around here charge more then $20.

At least I'd like to think I saved more then that...by performing the install myself :D

You can rent the spring compressor from either autozone or advance auto parts for free.
Well pay the deposit then use the tool then return it and get full refund.

    Fun fun good luck

Yea, it was just a guess on cost. I didnt do it that way. I rented a spring compressor. But I read that a lot of members just pull the entire strut off and bring them to suspension shop and they would swap the coil for them for about $10-20.

    Yes sir
If you don't do it yourself, stay as far away from a dealer as you can. Toyota would be more then happy charging $100 an hour for easy work, they'll just take their sweet time :D

I just started mine today, 5100's @ 1.75 with stock springs and the 1/4 ToyTec spacer (DRIVERS SIDE ONLY) to stop the drivers side lean (Taco Lean). I only did the driver's side so far, have to finish tomorrow. I used this video below. Pretty easy. I would make sure you have at least two floor jacks, two jack stands, and two wooden 4x4's to add to the jacks to increase the lift height.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkVLBOnAifc#action=share

1.75 leveled the truck, however it DID NOT look like it visually. The wheel wells measured 3/4 higher at the rear but the truck appeared nose high. I had to install one inch blocks, now it looks perfect. the I have 2013 DCLB Sport 4x4 with the 4 leaf pack.

Call some friends over to help, you can do it.

Make sure you mark your alignment cams so you can set them back to drive to the alignment shop.

    Good luck!

Did you feel like the truck was gonna lift off the jack stands instead of compressing the spring? Shouldn't happen with stock springs but with other heavy weight ones it may.

Had it happen with a civic and it was sketchy. Have to press down on the car or put some sand or salt bags over the fender...

Still gonna try it that way myself lol.

I did mine myself, and in hindsight I would have lifted only one side at a time.
This way you always have 3 wheels on the ground, which is more secure.

I also performed a swap utilizing a spring compressors and felt more comfortable using the vehicle as a compressor :)

It's not bad at all just give yourself plenty of time and enjoy the learning process. Do your homework before you start. This site is full of good info. Make sure you have an impact, torque wrench, spring compressor, jack, jack stands, sockets and wrenches. It was fun for me.

300 bucks is what i paid. 4 shocks, add a leaf and coils. If you not mechanically savy, then let a trusted offroad shop do it. That way if something goes wrong, then they fix it and they have all the tools.
