I just got finished installing my 5100s in my 1st gen Taco. All said and done, it was only a two and a half-hour job...most of that time being spent using a "two-piece" manual spring/strut compressor. After unhooking the sway-bar linkage and taking the castle-nut off the upper ball-joint on the right side, my buddy and I realized all we really had to do was remove the top and bottom mounting hardware on the coilover in order to remove it. Sure enough, the left side came off w/ the removal of four bolts. Re-installation was just a matter of lining the bottom of the shock back up with the lower control arm; a pry-bar between the frame and the UCA provided plenty of leverage to do so.

After reading many of the tales of woe and frustration from 2nd gen owners, I wasn't sure if this was going to be an all-day ordeal or what. Having done it, I'd say "go ahead" and try to do it yourself if you're considering new shocks...and a big thanks to Down South for the sweet pricing on the 5100/5125 setup. It's just foolish to not upgrade...

Good to hear you didn't have any issues.

I always scratch my head when I read these posts about people disconnecting the UCA from the spindle, or what ever else they might be taking off that isn't necessary. I've done two 3 inch lifts on the Tacoma so far and have not once needed to disconnect anything other than the sway bar and strut.

Worthless?! It looks like any other non-lifted 1st gen Taco :)
