Icon Coilover question corrosion/install

two questions with respect to my Icon coilovers

1) Is it normal wear to have corrosion on the coils after about 2 months? I am wondering if the installer scratched them during install. Do i need to worry about this?

2) At the bottom of the cylinder, the black part has a split about 1-2" wide. It looks like on one side (passanger side) the gap is facing toward the rear of the truck as opposed to the other side (driver side) its facing toward the front of the truck. Does this matter? I'm a little concerned the steel rod from the shock is exposed to more elements when facing toward the front.

The is only one way to install the coilovers, and that is the right way. So if it is different from side to side, that is the only way it can be done.

that gap is there so you can pull that spring plate off to replace the coils during a rebuild or swap out different spring rate coils...

it won't fall off or anything and they don't have to line up with each other...
