worn out leaf packs? help me out

NEWEST UPDATE:: please read my last pos descibing the issues. something of a "weight shifting" when stopping, greased driveline and it stopped for several days, now its back.

UPDATE: i am now looking for some used leafpacks that some of you may have to replace mine. need to be in pretty good condition. hoping that someone on here has lifted their truck with new packs and no longer needs theirs. there has to be someone!

okay well i bought my tacoma about a month and a half agoa nd all has been well except i seem to have a weird problem while stopping. if i come to a somewhat abrupt stop, not slamming on brakes but not taking a half mile to slow down, after fully stopped i will let off the brake to go and it seems like the rear of the truck settles. like the suspension was under tension. this sounds like axle wrap to me, however this is my 2nd truck so i could be wrong. its an 04 4wd with 60k on the clock. so i got home today and looked under it to see if i could find something obviously casuing this and i looked at the spring packs. they sit almost comepletely flat with no curve at all. should this be this way even with stock leafs? they also have a slight upward bend in them right at the axle. i tried to take pics but its kinda hard to get a picture there.

the other issue im having is that if i go over just a regular bump in the road or a pothole or railroad tracks it seems like something it bouncing and it seems to be something in the front end. it doesnt really effect steering at all but it makes enought sound that i can hear it in the cab, almost as if it were hitting the floor boards. its not constant so i cant put my finger on it. all help is much appreciated. ill have pics up in a few minutes of the leaf packs

 

where would it be broken if i were looking and where do i find replacements. also if im looking at a lift later in would it be smarter to buy a lifted pack versus a OEM with a AAL?

I would suggest looking at wheelersoffroad.com
They have some great leaf packs. They have a 5Leaf pack that will give a 1.5" lift, and others.

 

Just look at each one and see if you see any cracks or breaks.
If not then there just shot, and need replacing.

you'll pay less for a good set of aftermarket springs that are better than OEM ones than you would at Toyota for a new set of OEM ones.

 

My 2000 Tacoma did it and my 02 does it as well, You need to grease the crap out of the slip shaft on the drivline. I also put some firestone ride rite air bags on and it seemed to help. The older 1st gen tacomas are famous for the clunk sound.

 

The infamous "axle wrap". I solved mine with a set of $25.00 "helper springs" from Advance Auto. I did also put moly grease on the driveshaft where the slipshafts are.

But from the pics your springs are toast. Go with a good aftermarket spring set. You'll fix everything with one easy install.

 

how do i grease the slip shafts? are there grease ports or do i take it apart to load it up? also you do believe that what im feeling is axle wrap? good to know. and you say this clunk sound that i think may be from the front end is possibly the slip shafts on the drive shaft going to the rear end? why would it sound like its coming fron the front then?

 

so that one little grease fitting at the top of the yoke is the one that i should jsut fill up with grease? how do i know when its full? is it possible to put too much in? any specific grease or just a moly grease?

okay i took your advice and went and bought a grease gun and a tube of mobil1 grease. it was a 12.5oz tube. at first when i did it i only pumped till it started coming through the end of the connection (zert fitting). i did all the zerts i could locate in the drive shaft. well that didnt stop it nor help nearly at all. well today when i went to go get some oil for the truck (i only change it with mobil1 10w30 FTW) i decided i would pick up a haynes manual as well and see if they covered this in there. got it home and started flipping throught and it did. said to make it come through the slip joint seal. so i went back to add more and now i have used that whole tube of grease. i havent gotten to drive it yet to see if this helped, but using that much it has to do something. i also did the front shaft as well and i put a ton in there also. even a little water seeped out before the grease started oozing. (nasty black stuff!)

so how often should this be done for future reference?

 

okay well i did as eeryone explained and greased the driveline again until a little grease seeped through the slip shaft where we are thinking the problem is coming from. it worked for about 3 or 4 days and now its back, just like it was. is there a seal thats gone bad somehow? is this replaceable? also something that ive noticed is that the shifter for both the trans and the t-case move a little when stopping hard or accelerating quickly. is this a sign that the trans mount is going bad? could this possibly have anything to do with the other issue of the "weight shifting"?

 

Yep, I would get some new spring packs, or a add a leaf or a set of air bag helper springs. Both my Toyotas did exactly what your describing. They are know for it!

 

my auto shifter moves also when accelerating and braking. But I dont think my springs are bad, they still have a little possitive ark in them. And I have a AAL.
So what could be causing it?
