Unhappy Help, bad vibration after 3" ToyTec OME lift

Hi Folks,

I'm new to TTORA.com and could use some help. I have just had a ToyTec OME3-AL-882 (3” front Old Man Emu coils with rear 2”add a leaf) professionally installed, I now have a very serious front vibration (and related noise) starting at speeds of 45-50 MPH and it gets worse with higher speeds even with the ToyTec 1” front diff drop installed.

Is the 3" lift too much for my 2000 Tacoma XTRA Cab/4x4/V6/AT equipped with automatic differential disconnect even with the diff drop?

All steering and driveline parts are in good shape. Cleary this is likely a CV problem.

Do I need to change the front OME 882 coils for their 2" Lift - Front Coil Spacers to use with my factory coils? Will the 881 coils work instead? Help?!!?

Bought this truck with 100k and it had never been wheeled. I do a lot of highway driveway and I know the front CV’s won’t last long like this.

By the way, the front end hasn’t been aligned yet. That was next on my list but I put the new tires/alignment on hold as I believe this vibration is a big problem.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions. I wanted to get some direction from veteran Tacoma owners before I start switching out parts as that gets really expensive!!!!

Did you install new wheels & tires also?

First, I would rotate the tires and see if anything changes - if the vibration changes feel or location or whatever. I'm not saying you'll discover anything - it's just a routine thing to do to try and troubleshoot. You're trying to see if you have an out-of-balance wheel/tire.

Definately get an allignment done.

And...after that - I'd take it back to the place that installed everything and have them double check their installation - making sure everything is tight and torqued properly.

I think 3" front lift is the MAX you can run - but that alone (without other hidden probelms) shouldn't cause vibrations up front.

Tire balance/alignment

No, I haven't installed new tires or had the alignement done yet. The tire shop was the next stop after picking the truck up from the shop that did the lift install but I have a feeling the vibration is CV related so I wanted to fix it before doing anything else.

I didn't want to pay for two alignments in the event I have to swap the Old Man Emu 882 coils out for something else.

The existing tires on the truck are Goodyear 31x10.5's that were rotated and balanced in late December right after I purchased the truck.

Janster is right, swap the tires and see if it gets better, eliminate the obvious, and yes this is an issue needing quick attention, guessing from here sounds like you got a bad install. Telemetry is an exact science, a little out is a lot out when multiplied by highway speed. Take it back and have them re-adjust the lift... but... be there with the test drive, let them drive it with you in the passenger seat, leave no wiggle room.

I would have to agree with the above. I have a 3" Toytec in a high mileage 1st gen, installed it at home after Thanksgiving. I didn't get the allignment done (yet), and have no serious vibration issues. My camber is off. wheels look like this: \----/. I will be getting new tires and wheels soon and will get the allignment done beforehand. Try jacking up the front end, grab ahold of the wheel/tire, and wiggle the wheel side to side and up and down. If there is any play or movement, you may have a problem that needs addressed.

On Saturday I am installing the exact same lift that Toy4 has. I have been told to get an alignment done immediately.

GA2000, it almost sounds to me like something is loose. NOT GOOD if that is true. I know I'm stating the obvious, but you really shouldn't drive that thing right now I would think. Not to question your judgment. I don't mean anything by it, just sounds bad. I agree with these guys though. I think it was a bad install job. They are obligated to fix your problem.

Hi Folks,

I decided to go ahead and get new tires (BFG 32x11.50 AT) and get it aligned. I also had the tire shop remove the front spacers while it was in there. After all of this I would say 85% (maybe 90%) of the vibration is gone.

I can't say if it was the alignment, new tires or removal of the front spacers on top of the 882's (thus lowering the front end and making the CV's happier). I believe the problem is taken care of for now though.

By the way, I wouldn't recommend the 882's with the spacers as with both the front end sits up much higher than it should. With the 882's and spacers it would have top settle 1.5" or more just to look normal. The 882's and spacer might be justified if you are running a heavy bumper with a winch anr/or lights.


Kirk at ToyTec said they are thinking of dropping the 882's for this and many reasons.

Drive Shaft May Cause Vibration after Lift

You may also need to look at your drive-shaft. Some owners have reported vibrations such as yours after installing beefer rear leaf springs. The problem is the two piece drive shaft. Go to a one piece drive shaft and the vibration should be gone.

I was having some vibration and initially thought it was because I hadn't gotten the alignment done, it was in fact the drive shaft. A way cheaper alternative to a 1 piece drive shaft is to put a few washers between the frame and the center bearing on the drive shaft. I tried this just to see, and it worked great and was free. I used 4 washers on each of the 2 bolts (1 bolt on each side). That dropped the shaft down approximately 1/2", very, very easy to do.

I tried lowering the CSB and it didn't help. I just replaced the stock two piece driveshaft with a one piece built by a shop here in Atlanta. The truck is like new. The shaft installed was only $275.00

I just lift the rear my 2007 and seem to be getting the same thing...I have the vibs in the steering column as well as some when braking....

I will try your fix...any chance of having a picture of this joint....I just want to be sure I do the right connection

negate that request for a photo... I just went out side and did the drop in five minutes...great advice..
The vibration stopped at 40+ , but I still have one while decelerating from 30-20..

I guess I will try the shims next...

Im not sure that the lift would do that unless it was not properly installed. You may want to go back to where you got them installed and get them to look at them again. Maybe have one of the installers ride with you so you can show them exactly what your truck is doing. And I would also check the tires to see if they need to be rotated.

Dudes, these (our) trucks are very tempermental when it comes to geometry. Some guys/gals can do a 3" lift with no problems, so they say, but most have the vibes. It is in fact the stress placed upon the front CV's as well and the rear driveshaft carrier bearing being out of kilter. Sometimes shims help, sometimes they don't. Shimming the carrier bearing helped mine very little.
I had a 3" Toytec on mine and it sucked. It looked great, but the vibes were killing me. Took it all off except for the top plate spacer, which kept the frontend up about an inch over stock. The truck rode perfect again.
Now I've gone and installed the Bilstein 5100's all around and set the front spring perches at 1.75, and the CV's are very unhappy AGAIN. There's a very fine line between the sweet spot and vibes for those CV joints. It is a bummer, but I'm dropping it down to .85 tomorrow and am confident that will fix that problem. The rear was lifted only with the TSB springs, no vibes. Yeah it bites, but hey, I would rather my truck ride good and last for years than look cool. Even if you get the vibes to a minimum, there is damage being done inside the CV's......sad but true.

Lift vibration

Receipt for perfection, First I lifted my 08 tacoma trd off road with spacers and aal's and it road like crap, Drivetrain vibraion and could feel every bump/rock through streering wheel. Then I placed 2.5 Degree axle shim which improved take off shutter, however slight shutter still there and 50mph vib. Dropped the dime for bilstein CO's $800 which helped the front end alot, like stock or better with adjustable lift up to 3.5" set at 2.5". Still vib's and shutter in rear. Decided to drop dime on TW drive shaft Double cardan $450 and left shims in for axle ailgment. Now truck drives better and as good as new with a small lift. Now I almost have 2K (install & alignment) in this very minor lift and It drives very nicely and MPG also has improved (CB friction). However, I have a very, very major problem with Toyota Engineering and their horrible driveshat design. Also tried all the adjusting the CB height and Also upgraded to bilstein 5125's in the rear. I know it's pricey but this has been the receipt that has worked for me. So, good luck to all who want to lift a tacoma.
