What would you recommend cutting it off with?

Here's one for you (and this might sound stupid), but the "majority" seem to set at 0 and all the way out, however I thought I heard they are suppose to be set at 2.5 for 3" lift....so which is it? If I set it at 0 and all the way out (like you showed me Sam)...whats the worse that can happen? I assume the garage doing the alignment won't be able to get it within factory spec...so will they adjust the castor/camber or will I have to do that and take it back in again?

at Zero, and all the way out.. the worst is your 285/75/16 (if you have them) will rub. with the 265 tire, zero is ideal IMO.

OK i am installing mine this weekend. i have a 3 inch spacer lift with 285/70/17 with a 4.5 back spacing on the wheels. so should i set them at 0 and all the way out? how much, or where will it rub? i have already done a little cutting since it rubbed to start with.
    thanks for the help.

Zero isn't going to work for that tire size, we did -2.0 on a friend's truck with 285/75/16 and there was barely a rub when backing up turning the wheel. Good Luck, and post what you did to make it work.

OK so how did your friends alignment work out? i want make sure i get 0 toe and camber and 2.6+ caster then i will worry about the tires rubbing.
like i said i have done some cutting already and i was not rubbing when i had low caster now that i am at 1.8 it rubs more so i cut some more but decided to stop cutting until i had these installed. i think part of why it is rubbing is the camber is set out 1.2.

anyway what i am trying to figure out is what setting with this size of tire will get my alignment right and then how much cutting can i expect? Sam you may have answered that i am just curios about the alignment what number did you friend get?

    thanks for the help.

5100s are set to 2.5 and had no caster of course. Just recently burned up my last free alignment from a 1 yr alignment I had. This is the 2nd one since putting on the LR UCAs. I set them just like in the pics here on 0 setting initially with the camber nut all the way out just to get to the alignment place. I'm running 275/75/18 Duratracs (32 x 11) I had to trim the front of the wheel well liner where that little box part hangs down but other than that rubbing on nothing. They don't touch the sway or the uca or any other parts. They nailed all the specs. Got 0 camber, 0 toe & 3.3 caster. No twitchy steering, no obvious tire wear, no vibes, all good. Here's a pic when install in progress..........

Ironically, I just realized CDN BACON was the "buddY" in questions.. with 2.0 negative caster adjusting on the LR, he got i think 1.7 caster.. or so. He would chime in but he is in Brazil.. tough job.:sadviolin:

Hey Jeff, long time no see/talk.?? You coming to any of the local meets in the next two months? we got one at the end of the month Prerunner Friendly! :D

Hey man what's up? Been on here and there, mostly pushin up on projects round the house like standby 20kw natural gas whole house generator for hurricane season or any other pwr outage, finally gettin the builder people to finish one of my bathrooms on third try warrantying out a tub, buildin a coupla bikes, doin a few things on the car, mother's day, entertaining the wifey, working from home on Saturday's due to processing sched for last few weeks blah, blah, blah. Did go to San Angelo SP & Lake Minerals wells awhile back for mt biking/camping. Yeah, been seeing the Llano area Long Ranch thing but not sure with work sched and Memorial Day comin up. Believe me, wanna be livin the Tacolife but have had to spread it around a lot lately. Need to get out to one and give the new tires some good offroad time. Only offroad they've seen so far is about 1/2 a mile at a time on some lame cut thru deal on my way home from work between the mall and 99 around Greenbusch rd. I'm really trying to see about the Long Ranch thing, could still hit my buddy's house down the rd off 1431 by Lago Vista then hit the meet. Just not tryin to jinx it with a bunch of maybe posts, lol.

81 Ft-Lbs for the 19mm Castle nut on the bottom of the ball joint.

The big 32mm Nut on the top of the LRs is 120Ft-Lbs according to the instructions that come with them.

I always just set them all the way out during an installation.

LR UCA'a have 2* positive caster built in so setting them at 0 for the ride to the alignment shop should be fine.

And PrerunnerSeth is correct the torque of the LR balljoint nut is 120ft lbs.

Hey guys, i just installed my UCA's Thursday night, and thought I would share this for future installs.

I too set my rotating ball joint at 0, but wanted to get as close as possible to correct alignment since the shop was closed when I finished and I had important plans 60 miles away.

To do this I simply aimed the calipers directly ahead and used a bubble level on the finished surface of the calipers to get a rough 0 degree setting by making sure the calipers were perpendicular to the ground. You will want to set the bubble level on your radiator support first to make sure the truck itself is level... if it isn't, level it out with a jack or do what I did and compensate for the amount the bubble is off center when aligning the calipers.

On my 2010 4wd with OME 884s, and 265/75 tires, this resulted in the "sliding adjuster" being slid in about 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch and it drives PERFECT (even at 90mph). I will post my alignment numbers when i get it professionally aligned (SOON) to see how well this procedure worked.

FWIW, I am on the "zero" setting and my caster came in at 2.7. As mentioned above the zero setting is 2 degrees more than the OE UCA.

Agreed, my caster went from 1.2 to 3.3 with 0 setting on the LR UCA ball joint.

    Thanks
