Alternative Method: Strut Removal and Strut Disassembly Combined

    I was surprised at how easily it compressed the new, stiffer 885. So obviously the energy was easily transfered to the compression of the coil and not elsewhere where it may have ended up with a failure of some sort.

    If the coil was not compressing with little ease then I would have stopped it.

    I made a judgement call and ran with it and it worked for me. I may have gotten lucky or maybe this way works just as well.

    And you guys are right about the "confined in the wheel well" comment.

    My logic was that if it was going to fail, that it would either shoot upwards or downwards, but when applying and reducing the tension on the springs a failure can occur anywhere causing the entire assembly to fly out in any direction. So I was wrong to say that it was confined.

    I can say no one was standing in front of the wheel well in case that had happened. We were jacking it up from in front of the bumper.

    I was doing a strut with a professional wall mount, and it failed, sending the coil into my safety glasses I was wearing. Just think twice about how you do things, please.

    All methods have some risk. We need to be careful regardless of the method we choose. Even if Brunes disagrees.:)
