Lifting questions...

I am trying to help a friend with lifting a 4wd 2005 Tacoma he just bought. He is not very mechanical. That being the reason for my research and post regarding his truck. He wants to lift it and put 285's on proper backspaced wheels on it. I am 44 and have lifted trucks before but things have changed a bit since my 1982 Toyota 4wd. Suspension lifts were a bit more simple back then. He does not want to spend a fortune but he wants proper handling. From searching different threads I have noticed most 3" lifts seem to really require replacing uca's for proper alignment. The expense gets pretty high with the cost of uca's. It looks like from posts I read that you can lift 2.5" in front max and still retain uca's and alignment can be proper. What I am thinking about on his truck is OME 2.5" lift coils, 1-2" aal in rear, bilstein 5100's all the way around. Let me know what yall think???

 

TSMAY51.....Great question...I was just getting ready to post the same thing....There are so many posts on lifting and I just want a little lift as well. I want to do the same OME 2.5" lift coils, 1-2" aal in rear, and bilstein 5100's all the way around.
Can anyone tell me where i can get the lift coils..( i saw the group buy on here for the bilstein 5100's) and whice aal is best...(does anyone know if you can buy it all in a kit? would be nice since alot of people are wanting it...
P.S. what is the best place to get wheel and tires? i have been looking at rimzoneonline.com anywhere else have lower prices?

, Welcome to TacomaWorld tsmay. you can use stock coils with the 5100's. new uca's are a good idea but not necessary.

 

even at 2.5 inches of lift, new ucas are a good idea. i'm running 2.5 up front and 1.5 in the rear. my alignment is within spec, but will not be where i want it until the UCAs come in. getting a lift coil and billies will give you a nice ride, but will actually be redundant since you can set the 5100s for different amounts of lift (the front ones that is). billlies up front and an aal in the back would be the most cost effective way. 5100s in the back are not needed, but will give him a better ride. as for the 285s, though would need new UCAs, but the more the lift, the easier it is to fit them.

I'm thinking with this small of lift I may try to convince him to go with 265's. With the proper wheels they can perform well and look good as well. Thanks for advice on the shocks and not needing the aftermarket coils as well.

 

would adding just the 5100's without coils in front put excessive strain on the shocks, or will they be ok without aftermarket coils?

 

The new 5100's shocks are designed to work with the factory coil, so no, there will not be to much strain on the stock.
