Changing Rear end gear ratios

Tacoma Forum; I just hop'd over from the towing section, and I'm new. I'm researching changing the rear end gearing in an 06 Tacoma 2wd 5sp 2.7ltr access cab. Looks to be a A05A Rear end according to the plate. According to my research on the web that'd be a 3.15 ratio. I think that's the highest offered? So to get more low end oomph at the boat ramp how low should I go? Looks like 3.42, 3.58, 3.91, 4.10, 4.30, 4.56 are offered as available options...... I'm thinking a real Granny gear for 1st and boat ramps, then use 2nd-5th for commuting like a 4 spd. Is this a reasonable idea?

 

From what I've found aftermarket gears start at 4.56 and go up. If you can find a used set from another 2nd gen Taco that opens up your options to 3.31, 3.58, 3.73, and 4.10.

5 lug w/manual tranny: 3.31
5 lug w/auto tranny: 3.58

6 lug 4cyl prerunner or 4wd: 4.10
6 lug v6 prerunner or 4wd: 3.73

I've heard it said that the 3.73 and 4.10 gears won't fit in the 5 lug carrier, so the only way to run those ratios would be to get a fully assembled third member from a 6 lug. This has been disputed and I'm not sure if it is actually true for the 2nd gen tacomas.

 

So on my 5 lug I presume I then have 3.31 and3.58 as sure options?

I have an 07 prerunner sr5 2.7 5 speed 6 lug and would like to install a 3.15 according to my vin I have 3.73 and I dont like it and would like to change it

 

Lower Rpms; What are your operational RPMs ? I'm thinking of the 3.58...
