Hi-Lift Jack - Operation Question

I just purchased a 48inch steel Hi-Lift jack and am having trouble getting the jack into a locked postion so I can begin jacking things up. I read the instructions and when I attempt to push the pin upwards into the "locking" postion, I can only get it half way up. I see where the pin/arm will "lock" but I cannot lift the pin high enough to secure a locking postion.

Has anyone had this problem with the Hi-Jack lift? If so, your help is appreciated.

Pursuade it to work with a rubber mallet, followed by a hammer if the mallet does not work

Thank you for responses

Thanks everyone. I applied the advice and used a little more force to get the jack locking lever working properly and I am good to go now. I will follow the preparation and maintainence instructions in the video - which was great by the way.
