Not going into gears easily in MT

    I just bought a new 09 Tacoma but didn't trade the old 1996 T100 truck in. I am not sure if I will keep it or just sell it for cheap. Engine is in good shape. Within the year replaced front and rear main seals and a new clutch. I bought the new truck because the T100 is having trouble going into a gear. Is there anything I can do to rectify this beside replace/rebuilding the manual transmission? What is the cause? Shift forks?

    Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
    If you have an issue with just one particular gear, it is more than likely the synchro for that gear. About the only thing you can try (without actually replacing the synchro) is changing to a synthetic gear oil. I would suggest Mobil 1 or Amsoil severe gear.

    How involved is replacing a synchro? Not as involved as a rebuild or does it require a rebuild?

    Thanks for the reply and links. I don't want to do a rebuild as any time I have needs to go to the new truck and my bikes. Will see if the sythentic gets me a little further. And then I may have to just sell it or give it to charity.

    does it shift good when the engine is off,if so your pressure plate may not be fully releasing

    Thanks for the pointer! If I can't get it into reverse I can turn the engine off and then it will just slide right in.

    When I had the clutch replaced (less than a year ago) we replaced the hydraulics too. I have replaced the clutch on my Trans Am and there was no adjustment that I can remember for the pressure plate. Is there something that I can do on the T100 to get the pressure plate to fully release? Looking at the manual doesn't seem I have many adjustments beyond pedal free play.

    The reverse thing is normal. If you got to first then to reverse it should slide right in. There is no adjustment.

    Clutch pedal free play. Adjusted that and all is good again. Now to sell this thing for new Tacoma parts :D
