HELP!!!! This Lady loves her toyota

Hi. I have a 1995 toyota tacoma with about 203,000 miles on her. It is pretty much my baby. I took my truck into the dealership for the 200,000 miles check-up and had them check out a high pitch whinning sound. They told me I needed a new transmission and a new clutch. Something about bolts being loose (which caused damage to the new clutch (which I replaced 3 years ago). They estimated $2700.

SO here is my question. Should I replace the clutch and transmission or should I just get a new truck. They guy at the shop said its would probably be better to just get a new truck. How much longer do you think she would go if I replace both parts? or do you think it at this many miles it would be a endless money pit.

Buy a new Tranny and Clutch. I really don't see the dilemma here...

 

second opinions are always good...but with 200k miles on it, sounds like it might be reaching the end. You might replace the trans, but then what might go wrong w/ the engine or other expensive components?

 

check to see if your frame is rusty. Wait is the buy back only for 2000-2004?

In our area there are a few guys on craigslist that have transmissions available along with motors, maybe check on there to see what you can come up with.

I cant imagine a whining noise being a transmission, i would mostly think a grinding or slipping noise before anything

Buy back 95-2000

THanks mattleegee. I really appreciate your advice. I think my car is to old 1995 for the buyback. It sounds like I should get a second opinion.

 

95's can get bought back, But get a second opinion and if your screwed maybe do a quick scroll through on craigslist and see if you find anything that stands out.

 

The buy back requires a rust hole in the frame with 15 years since the original date of sale. Mostly happens in areas with salted roads. If the truck is from Seattle, not very likely.

X2 on a second opinion. At 200K it's possible you need a trans rebuild, but I can't picture what bolts they are talking about. That comment bothers me. And the price seems high, even at dealer labor rates. The last time I had a stick shift trans rebuilt was ten years ago, it cost 830 bucks at that time. A clutch at the same time would have added another 200.

Try to find an independent Toyota specialist or ask a coworker or friend to recommend someone they trust.
